Akagera National Park is a haven for birders with over 500 species recorded, both endangered species like papyrus gonolek and shoebill and more easily available species like weavers, egrets and several kingfishers. In Nyungwe National Park search for Ruwenzori turacos and Grauer's swamp warblers in the Kamiranzovu swamp and look for Albertine rift endemic birds in Nyungwe forest. The combination of birding and wildlife experiences in both Akagera and Nyungwe Parks is an enriching experience as well as an adventurous safari that will give enough time to discover unique species of birds and wildlife. Together with chimp trekking, the thrilling canopy walk and tea plantation viewing your camera will be full of amazing moments.
Transfer to Akagera National Park in the morning. In the afternoon enjoy a thrilling boat ride on Lake Ihema to see hippos, giant Nile crocodiles and lots of water birds – over 50 species are recorded here. Overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.
Early breakfast at 5:45am in preparation for a bird watching day. It’s important to start early before it gets hot and the birds hide from the heat. This park is known for having the highest concentration of birds per square kilometre in any national park in Africa. The 525 bird species includes Albertine rift endemics, papyrus gonolek, shoebill stork and 44 raptor species. We will search for the shoebill stork around Birengero and Rwanyakizinga lakes. It’s also a good chance to see other wildlife such as eland, Cape and roan antelopes. The park is also known for its diversity of reptiles, amphibians, plants, magnificent landscapes and historical sites. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park stopping en route along Nyabarongo River basin for more bird watching. There’s an optional visit to the Cathedral of Kabgayi and other historical sites such as the ancient King’s Palace at Nyanza, National Museum at Huye. Overnight in Nyungwe.
Early breakfast at 5am then drive through the park, home to the largest mountain forest in East and Central Africa. Search for as many of the 278 bird species listed here as we can. Chimpanzee trekking is optional. The fantastic tea plantations around Nyungwe National Park add more value to scenery as you wait to add more lifers. In the afternoon, visit the waterfalls in the park en route to site some new species of birds. Overnight in Nyungwe.
This day is dedicated to birding in Kamiranzovu swamp searching for the rare Ruwenzori turacos, and the grauer’s swamp warblers etc. You will visit different locations in the park to try and see as much as you can and if possible all the 27 Albertine rift endemic birds found in Nyungwe forest. End the day with a canopy walk in the forest. Overnight in Nyungwe.
This day is dedicated to birding on Bigugu mountain searching for more rare bird species. You will continue to visit different locations in the park to try and see as much as you can and later transfer to Kigali. Overnight in Kigali.
Gorilla trekking can be included on this on the 6th day if required (additional cost).
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
