Fly from Antananarivo to Maroantsetra airport (own cost) where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Maroantsetra. Then head off on a tour to look for the endemic frogs of Antoangile Bay in Maroantsetra town, called tomato frog, as well as visiting the local markets to see the local way of life of the people who live near the park.
Overnight at Cocobeach or similar
After your breakfast you will have a boat transfer to Masoala National Park. On arrival, our team will welcome you with coconut juice on the beach before you head to your room. Start your exploration of Masoala National Park, searching for red ruffed lemurs and chameleons, before lunch. Afterwards, there are options to go snorkeling in the Community Marine Park to see the fish and coral reef, and if you’re lucky, sea turtles too. Then enjoy sunset at the beach and overnight at a lodge.
After breakfast we explore the primary rain forest of Masoala, with giant trees over 400 years old, on a morning walk. With lovely bird song, the forest is home to over 9o species, as well as lemurs jumping around from tree to tree, including white fronted brown lemurs. Giant millipedes can also be spotted across the paths in the jungle. Have a water/biscuit break and listen to the hundreds of different sounds of nature. Walk slowly back to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon relax on the nice beach. In the evening we can do a night walk to see the lemurs active at this time of day, such as brown mouse lemurs, sportive lemurs, woolly lemurs, dwarf lemurs as well as some leaf tailed geckos. Back to the lodge for diner and overnight.
Today we explore the two types of forest in Masoala; primary and secondary forest, searching for Madagascar crested ibis, helmeted vanga, berniers vanga, short legged ground roulers, lesser bamboo lemurs, red ruffed lemurs, pigmy kingfisher, as well as enjoying the lush forest and giant vine over 100 years old. On a river walk search for amazing tiny frogs, then head back to the lodge for a late lunch. Relax on the beach at the end of the day enjoy the sunset again.
After breakfast we will explore the marine wildlife with a boat transfer to Tampolo Marine Park. Walk on paradise beaches, sunbathe and snorkel in the marine park searching for star fish, parrot fish, butterfly fish, barracudas. Have a picnic lunch on your own paradise beach, before a boat ride back to the lodge. This is followed by a quiet river trip by local canoe made of tree trunk up to the Tampolo River, among the mangroves, observing rose wood trees and if we are lucky we will see the eastern bamboo lemurs jumping around as well as birds such as king fishers and white throated rail. Walk back slowly to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast take a boat transfer to Nosy Mangabe Island, which takes about 1.5 hours. The island is part of the larger Masoala National Park. On arrival at Nosy Mangabe take a short walk before lunch, searching for the second smallest chameleon in the world, called brookessia piererasia, which live on the ground among dried leaves. Continue the walk searching for black and white ruffed lemurs, white fronted brown lemurs and snakes such as boas (we don’t have dangerous snakes in Madagascar!) Continue on searching for the green backed manthelas frogs then walk back to the camp site for lunch.
After lunch look for the king of camouflage – leaf tailed geckos (uroplatus fumbriatus) – on the tree trunks. They have amazing camouflage, we will have a competition to see who can spot one! The geckos are night active but if you search for them well you can find them sleeping on a tree trunk. Continue the walk enjoying orchids, nice beaches and white fronted brown lemurs sunbathing. Take a boat transfer back to Maroantsetra then transfer to the airport for your flight back Antananarivo where you overnight (at your own cost).
