Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport you’ll be met and transferred to the city for a briefing on your safari. Dinner at leisure this evening – for own cost.

Kigali
Rwanda’s capital and biggest city stretches across undulating lush hills surrounded by towering mountains, the largest of which is Mount Kigali, rising 1850 metres above sea level. Kigali is the country’s financial, commercial and cultural hub, served by an international airport and featuring a wide range of accommodation options, restaurants and points of interest, including the Kigali Genocide Centre, an atmospheric market and numerous craft shops. With its interesting architecture, busy streets, meandering boulevards, and green hillsides, Kigali is said to be one of the most attractive cities in Africa and is definitely worth a visit.

After breakfast, enjoy a tour of Kigali city including a visit to genocide memorial, handicraft shops. Late morning, start for Parc des Volcans with views of the great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest. With stops at place of interest, proceed to Kinigi arriving in time for lunch. This transfer by road is approximately 3-3.5 hours. In the afternoon, you may drive around the village or take a walk go to the craft shops for shopping and later return to the lodge.

Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel in Musanze (Ruhengeri) located on the road going to Kinigi is the perfect starting point to go for different activities that the Volcanoes National Park is offering but also gives you lot of opportunities to rest and to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the lodge. With 13 bedrooms (double/twin), a VIP cottage, a restaurant, a pool, a traditional sauna and a steam sauna awaits, the staff looks forward to make your stay a pleasant one.

Volcanoes National Park
Bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park is best known as a sanctuary for the region’s rare mountain gorillas. Visitors flock here to experience a face to face encounter with these intriguing creatures. The park is set high on the jungle-covered slopes of the volcanic Virunga Mountains. Highly regulated treks through the reserve allow visitors to spend an hour at a time with these incredible primates in their natural habitat. While the gorilla’s are without a doubt the main drawcard, visitors can also look forward to exploring a network of scenic hiking trails, visiting the tomb of the world-famous Dian Fossey and the Karisoke Research Centre, and enjoying a beautiful day hike to the crater lake on Mount Bisoke.

Kigali Genocide Memorial & Museum
The Centre in Kigali was created by a joint partnership of the Kigali City Council and the UK-based Aegis Trust. It is situated in the Gasabo district about 3 km from the Kigali City Center. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the best known and most visited memorial site in Rwanda because of its easy accessibility. Tourists arriving at the Kigali International Airport will find the site an easy drive from the airport or from one of the many hotels located in and around Kigali.

Early morning transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park staff. Loaded with your drinking water, packed lunch and walking stick, enter the forest in search for the famous Mountain Gorillas. The trail into the forest, will abruptly immerse you in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest – Home to the Gorillas. An exhilarating gorilla trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virungas can be muddy and challenging but offers a great experience.

Alive with the calls of gorillas you will spend an hour before heading back to the base. As you do, through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks, among the highest in Africa are glimpsed.

An afternoon siesta, then later go for an optional visit of ibyi’wachu Cultural village. The organized village is a 16 minutes’ drive from the Lodge composed of ex poachers who turned their back on poaching to participate in various activities that benefit them and also add value to tourism. A visit to the village will take you through the traditional house of a local king, watch an authentic medicine man prepare herbal mixtures, try your hand at bow and arrow shooting or enjoy cultural dances and drumming.

Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Trekking
This experience offers visitors the unique opportunity of discovering the 10 families of gorillas that live within the national park. Visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee before the trek starts and will be separated into groups of 8 depending on their physical abilities. Each group is guided by a guide and two scouts who are well trained in emergency situations. The amount of time set aside per trek is different depending on where the gorilla family is situated. Some trips may take as little as half an hour and some taking the better part of the day.

Experience a fantastic Golden Monkey Trek early this morning before returning to Volcanoes Five. Check out and road transfer back to Kigali, checking back into The Serena for one night. Enjoy dinner at leisure.

Volcanoes National Park Golden Monkey Trekking
This unique experience allows guests in groups of up to eight to look for and discover golden monkeys within their natural habitat. The monkeys are incredibly active and enjoy showing off for tourists and researchers that they encounter daily. The monkeys can be found closer to the base of the volcano and enjoy eating the bamboo vegetation in the area.
