Mount Kilimanjaro is the largest mountain on the African continent and the highest free standing mountain in the world, an exceptionally beautiful mountain from both far away and close up. Enjoy diverse landscapes as you ascend through five cultivation zones and be inspired as you look out among endless vistas. You will leave Tanzania with incredible memories and a sense of accomplishment to last a lifetime. All of our guides are experienced in wildness first aid training and we are proud member of Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project so you can be assured your climb is certified ethical and all our crew are properly looked after.
We consider the Marangu Route to be the most interesting. It provides a very balanced track having some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife. It gives you the chance to cross the entirety of the plain from west to east in a pleasant relatively flat hike. Know as the ‘coca cola route’, the Marangu route is a classic trek and is the oldest most well established route. Many favour the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, due to its more gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts with dormitory style accommodation. There are 60 bunk beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washroom, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.
Known as the “Roof of Africa” Mount Kilimanjaro is 5895 metres high. Rising over 5 km from the surrounding plains to a peak, the mountain was formed during the most recent faulting of the Great Rift Valley two to three million years ago. Kilimanjaro has three main peaks, together with parasitic volcanic cones and craters dotted around its sides. The youngest and highest peak is the destructive snow-capped dome of Kibo, 11 km to the east of Kibo is the jagged Mawenzi, the second highest peak at 5149 meters, and the last is Shira cone on the west side of the mountain which has most collapsed, leaving a spectacular lava plug.

After breakfast and briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate (about 1 hour) register and commence the climb. Walk through the rain forest to the Mandara encampment. A side trip to Maundi crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rain forest look for towering eucalyptus trees, bird life and colobus monkey.
You leave the glades of the rain forest and follow the path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. Views of Mawenzi and summit of Kibo are amazing. Look for giant labelias and groundsels. You may begin to feel the effect of the altitude.
Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heathland and then disappears into moonscape. Dinner, rest and prepare for the summit climb.
Very early in the morning ( midnight to 2am ) commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point located on the crater rim. Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment.
After breakfast, a steady descent takers us down through moorland to the Mandara Huts. Continue descending through lush forest on the path to the national park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet or muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t- shirt will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
Herbivore African Expeditions vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi.
