Guided, Small Group

Camping, Mid Range
This mid-range itinerary takes you on a journey through northern Tanzania’s unrivaled wildlife destinations – Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the fabled Serengeti – to deliver a dramatic and diverse big game safari. Begin your adventure by exploring Tarangire and its herds of elephants and dotted baobab landscape, then to Lake Manyara with its thousands of flamingos and famous tree-climbing lions before moving on to encounter the spectacle of the Ngorongoro Crater floor, home to Africa’s Big 5. The sweeping plains of the Serengeti provide a backdrop for the tour’s grand finale. Game viewing is superb all year round, but if you have timed your safari with the wildebeest migration, you can expect massed herds and plenty of predator action.

One day exploring Tarangire
You leave Arusha after breakfast with a picnic lunch packed safely away. The Rift Valley landscape drifts past as your guide heads for Tarangire National Park, the least visited reserve on the itinerary but one capable of delivering fantastic game viewing. Home to Tanzania’s biggest elephant population, Tarangire supports large numbers of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and many antelope species, most evident during the dry season when concentrations of animals at the life-giving Tarangire River are at their peak. You stop at a picnic site and enjoy your lunch with breathtaking views of the park’s landscape and the river below you, and maybe in the company of elephants drinking and digging water from the sand river banks. After lunch proceed with game viewing and in the late afternoon leave the park and drive to your Nsya Lodge for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast leave the camp and proceed to Lake Manyara National Park for a day of game viewing, in an area Hemingway described as, “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”.
Lake Manyara National Park is a naturalist’s delight thanks to its diverse environments. Ranging from the underground-water forest and acacia woodlands, grasslands, swamps, marshes, and hot springs, the park is simply packed with wildlife. Over 400 species of bird have been recorded including large flocks of flamingos and migratory water birds. Manyara’s forests ring with the call of monkeys and birds while its acacia woodlands are home to Manyara’s infamous tree-climbing lions and slow-strolling elephants. The park is also home to the largest troops of baboons in Africa, zebra wildebeest, giraffe, hippos, leopard, and impala, and in the late evening drive to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Two days exploring central Serengeti
Have a relaxed breakfast at the lodge and depart to Serengeti National Park with a nice packed picnic lunch to go with. Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, also a World Heritage Site and recently proclaimed as one of the seven wonders of Africa, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some 1.5 million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 300,000 zebras and 500,000 Thomson’s gazelles join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.
Within the two days, we are going to explore the plains, water holes, kopjes, and rivers for the spectacular great migration during the months of May-July. This is the best time of the year to see predators prey interaction, and the eastern plains of Namiri plains and the Gol-kopjes offering excellent cheetah and lion sighting. Our camp Serengeti Wild Camp is on the heart of it all, set on a high elevation offering an excellent view of the plains from your doorstep.
Head to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Leaving Serengeti, you gain altitude as you are driven east and into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A packed lunch sustains you on the way, and before long you check into your accommodation, Rhino Lodge, for one night, where you will experience true Tanzanian hospitality and a warm welcome.
Explore the Ngorongoro Crater floor
Leave the Rhino Lodge very early in the morning and drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation before descending, 610 meters down to the grasslands of the crater floor, an area of about 265 square kilometers. Despite its small size, the crater is Big 5 country and the openness of the terrain means easy and rewarding game viewing. You will spend the day exploring the crater floor, stopping to picnic on the grasslands amidst the grazing herds.
Formed by a massive volcanic eruption, the world’s largest intact and un-flooded caldera provides a year-round home to an astonishing 25,000 large mammals including black rhino, wildebeest, and zebra along with Africa’s densest concentrations of hyena. The crater’s forests shelter elephant and buffalo, its wetlands are home to hippos and flamingos while lions, jackals, leopards, and caracals make up the full range of predators. Late afternoon leave the crater behind and drive back to Arusha and you will be dropped at your accommodation, Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport
