4 Days Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara safari packge
The drive from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru takes about 3 hours along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. You’ll leave the city behind and head northwest through suburbs and farmland. The highlight is descending the Great Rift Valley escarpment – a steep, winding road with spectacular views of the valley floor and Mount Longonot in the distance. There’s a popular viewpoint where most people stop for photos. Once down in the valley, the road flattens out and passes through small towns like Mai Mahiu and Gilgil.
You’ll arrive at your lodge around midday, just in time for lunch. The lodge sits on a hillside with beautiful views over Lake Nakuru, offering a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal after your 3-hour drive from Nairobi. Take some time to settle into your room, freshen up, and perhaps enjoy the lodge’s facilities while resting during the hottest part of the day. Later in the afternoon ,you’ll head out for your afternoon game drive when temperatures cool and animals become more active. Your guide will take you through different sections of the park, searching for the resident wildlife including rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and the elegant Rothschild’s giraffes. The park’s varied habitats – from the lakeshore with its flamingos and pelicans to the acacia woodlands and open grasslands – offer diverse viewing opportunities. You might visit Baboon Cliff for panoramic views or explore the areas where tree-climbing lions are sometimes spotted. As the sun sets around 6:30 pm, you’ll return to your lodge for dinner and your first evening overlooking the park.
After an early morning game drive and breakfast at your lodge, you’ll check out around 10:00 am and begin the journey to Masai Mara. The drive takes about 5-6 hours, heading west through Narok town with scenic views along the way. You’ll arrive at your Mara camp or lodge in the mid-to-late afternoon, giving you time to check in, settle into your room, and relax. If you’re not too tired from the drive, there’s an option for a short late afternoon game drive around 4:30 pm to get your first taste of the Mara before sunset. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy the lodge facilities and prepare for your full day of game viewing tomorrow. Dinner and overnight at your Masai Mara accommodation.
Wake up early for a full day exploring the vast Masai Mara. Depart around 6:30 am with a packed lunch, allowing you to spend the entire day out in the reserve without returning to camp. The morning hours are prime time for spotting predators – lions, leopards, and cheetahs are active and hunting. You’ll traverse the endless plains teeming with wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and topis. Head to the Mara River to see hippos and crocodiles, and if you’re visiting during migration season (July-October), you might witness the dramatic river crossings.
Stop at a scenic spot around midday for your picnic lunch under an acacia tree, taking in the vast African landscape. Continue game viewing through the afternoon, covering different areas of the reserve and searching for the Big Five. The late afternoon light is perfect for photography as animals become more active again. Return to your lodge around 6:30 pm as the sun sets, having experienced the full breadth of the Mara’s incredible wildlife. Dinner and overnight at your camp.
Begin your final day with breakfast at your Masai Mara lodge, then check out around 9:00 am. Before leaving the area, stop at a nearby Maasai village for a cultural visit. You’ll be welcomed by the Maasai warriors with their traditional jumping dance, tour their manyattas (traditional homes), learn about their customs and semi-nomadic lifestyle, and see their colorful beadwork and crafts. The visit typically lasts about an hour. After the village experience, begin your 5-6 hour drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. You can stop in Narok town for lunch along the way if needed. This marks the end of your Nakuru and Masai Mara safari adventure.
