Day by Day Overview

Your luxury family safari starts with a pick up at Entebbe airport or your accommodation in Kampala. After a briefing on the major highlights of your safari, you embark on the drive to Jinja in Eastern Uganda with lunch on the way. When you reach Jinja in the evening, your guide will drive you to a luxuriously comfortable lodging for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast you head out for your day’s safari adventure. Your first visit is the source of the Nile and then you embark on an exciting white water rafting adventure on the River Nile. As well as white water rafting, there are a series of optional activities a family can engage in: bungee jumping, canoeing, kayaking, biking and horse riding. After lunch, you transfer to Sipi Falls, a series of three waterfalls situated in Kapchorwa district, northeast of Sironko and Mbale districts. As you approach Sipi Falls, the legendary Elgon mountain, commonly referred to as Mount Masaba by the native locals, will come into view. You will tour the falls and the several trail heads: the starting points of many hikes up Mount Elgon. You will check in at the comfortable Sipi River Lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, you set off on the drive to Kidepo Valley National Park to continue with your luxury family safari. On arrival check in and have lunch at Kidepo’s prestigious Apoka Safari Lodge. You will then go for a game drive in Narus Valley situated south of the park. The region is covered in savannah grasslands and acacia woodland and has the highest concentration of game in Kidepo Valley National Park because it is the only region with permanent water sources throughout the year. While doing an afternoon game drive, you will see thirsty animals drinking at the various pools such as large herds of buffaloes, zebras, lions and antelopes, among others. Return to the lodge in the late evening to have dinner and a good night’s rest.

Today’s adventure is a game drive in the pristine Pian Upe Game Reserve. During the drive, you will be able to see various wildlife and primate species including lions, zebras, cheetahs, buffaloes, kudus, hartebeests, vervet monkeys and olive baboons. You will also see a variety of bird species including but not limited to; ostriches, Jackson’s hornbills, white-headed buffalo weavers and Hartlaub’s bastard.

You will embark on another game drive, this time around in Kidepo Valley situated in the northern region of the park. On of the major highlights in this region is Kidepo River and its sand bed. The river is seasonal, it does not flow during the long dry spells, and is lined with lush borrasus palms which are habitat for a great number of bird species. You will also spot a great number of wildlife animals while driving through the valley, most likely leopard, ostrich and tortoise.

After the drive, you will have a family picnic lunch before setting out to the Karamojong community for a cultural encounter. As their guides take you through the community, you will see their manyattas, kraals, the grinding stones, the local defense fences and their cultural dance – edonga – among other things. You will be inspired by their culture and way of life. Afterwards head back to your comfortable lodging for dinner and overnight.

You will check out of your lodge after breakfast and then set out on a drive to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park. The park boasts a population of over 76 mammal species and more than 450 bird species. The other outstanding attraction in the park is the roaring Murchison Falls. Once you arrive at the park in the late afternoon, you will drive to the top of the falls before checking in at your lodging.

Your excursions in Murchison Falls National Park will begin with a good family breakfast before embarking on a game drive. You might drive through the Albert track, Buligi track or the Victoria track. Also, the area around Nyamsika gorge and its cliffs has a high concentration of game. You will see various animals including four of the big five; lion, elephant, leopard and  cape buffalo.

After lunch, enjoy a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile. The sight and sound of the gushing and rushing waterfalls is soothing and breathtaking. As you sail upstream to the bottom of the falls, you will spot hippos and crocodiles along the river banks while the cruise is also the ideal adventure for the avid birder. Enjoy the sight and sound of the abundant wildlife before the family retires for dinner and overnight in the late evening.

After having breakfast, your family will head off on a transfer to Kibale National Park, a primate hub with over 13 primate species including an astounding population of over 1450 individual chimpanzees. The drive to Kibale offers a thrilling view of the rugged landscape, the rolling hills, the green terraces and their steep slopes, the long-horned cattle and modest homesteads of the countryside dwellers. The park has everything in place to guarantee an unforgettable luxury family holiday experience.

You will have lunch en route and once you arrive at the park, you will go for a guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary before checking in at your choice lodging. The swamp is a habitat to over 200 bird species, and a variety of primate and mammal species including various kinds of monkeys, otters, bush pigs, bushbucks, sitatungas and mongooses. You will spend the evening enjoying Kibale’s bountiful wildlife, bird species and plant life. You will drive back to your lodge in time for dinner.

The day’s adventure will begin with Kibale’s major highlight – chimpanzee trekking. After breakfast, you will head out to Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing from the park authorities after which you will be allocated a chimp community to track. Chimpanzees live in large communities of about 100 individuals, with a typical tracking experience lasts between 2-6 hours. You will have the opportunity to watch the chimps go about their daily routine.

After the chimpanzee trekking experience, you will return back to your lodge, have a family lunch and take some time to unwind before embarking on a transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. On your way, you will visit the crater lakes region to explore the mass of eye-catching lakes formed as a result of volcanic explosions. Once you arrive at the park, you will check in for dinner and overnight.

Your experience in Queen Elizabeth National Park will begin with a game drive at 6:30 am after an early breakfast. You will head out to the famous Kasenyi plains with an experienced game ranger. The plains are a mass of African savannah known for harboring the largest concentration of game and bird species compared to any other section in park. You will head back to your lodge in the early afternoon to have a family lunch before setting out for a boat cruise on Kazinga channel, one of the most popular excursions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Sit back and enjoy the sight of elephants, buffalo, bush bucks, kobs and large herds of hippos on the riverbanks. Besides the various mammals, the channel is a habitat for various species of water birds. After the boat cruise, enjoy a nature walk before returning to your lodge for the night.

After having breakfast, the family will embark on a transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, passing through Queen Elizabeth’s famous Ishasha region – the home of the tree-climbing lions. As you drive through Ishasha, you will be amazed at the sight of the peculiar lions languidly stretched out in massive tree branches. You will also be able to spot other wildlife species in the region. You will have lunch en route and arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the early evening. The park offers an inexhaustible list of adventures for your luxury family holiday experience. After checking in you can enjoy on a guided nature walk followed by a great family dinner which will be the highlight of the evening.

One of the major highlights of this safari is mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After breakfast, you will report at the park headquarters and for a briefing about the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ while on a gorilla trekking excursion. A typical gorilla trekking excursion lasts between 2–8 hours. The hours you spent searching through the vast forest are not boring; you get to encounter a variety of mammal, primate and bird species as well as noteworthy floral and plant life. To undertake gorilla trekking excursion you must be 15 years or over. As there are age restrictions, you can choose other optional safari activities, favoring the entire family such as a Batwa trail experience, visiting the community of the native pygmy forest dwellers. After lunch, check out of the lodge and set off on a transfer to Mgahinga National Park.

Today is spent in Mgahinga National Park, which is situated in Kisoro district in the far south-western region of the country. In Uganda, it’s only in Mgahinga National Park where you can undertake golden monkey trekking. You spend an hour or two with the golden monkeys after spotting them when you can watch them go about their daily routine. After the excursion, you will have lunch and then transfer to Lake Bunyonyi where you will arrive in the late evening. Check in at your accommodation for dinner and the night.

On the last day of your luxury family holiday safari, you will have breakfast and then go for a boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi. Lake Bunyonyi translated as ‘the place of many little birds’ is a habitat to over 200 bird species and is the location of 29 islands spread across its waters. As you explore the islands, you will spot various bird species as Lake Bunyonyi lives up to its reputation as a birder’s paradise. You will have lunch before the return drive back to Kampala. Your guide will drop you to Entebbe airport to catch your flight marking the end of your safari.
