You will be driven from Kampala to Kibale National Park, making your way through the dense jungle and papyrus swamps of the Mityana and Mubende districts. After a beautiful drive through the changing landscapes that showcase the natural beauty of Uganda, you will reach the reserve that is located in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountain. Upon arrival, you will be able to enjoy a guided bush walk to the surrounding crater lakes. You will visit one of the local communities for a cultural experience before returning to your lodge for the evening.
Today you will set out into the Kibale Forest in search of one of the groups that make up the population of 500 chimpanzees that live in the reserve. After a delicious breakfast and a briefing, you will be guided into the dense forest in search of the habituated groups that are able to have contact with humans. Once you find them, you will be able to observe their behaviour, watch them feeding in the fig trees, witness them mating and socialising and truly get to know these distant cousins of ours. The forest will make for wet trekking conditions but will offer sightings of numerous primates and a host of other wildlife species, providing ample viewings before and after your encounter with the chimps. You will then make your way to Queen Elizabeth National Park for an afternoon drive and an evening boat cruise on the Kazinga channel that is filled with hippopotamuses. The park is dominated by savannah grasslands and houses over 612 bird species and 95 mammal species.
Today you will head out for a morning game drive to explore more of Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will visit the Kasenyi and Ishasha regions of the reserve, visiting the impressive crater lakes which lie on the Western edge of the Rift Valley escarpment. If you are fortunate, you may come across the famous tree climbing lions in the park. Thereafter you will head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the magnificent mountain gorillas and several other primate species like the blue and red-tailed monkeys. You will arrive at your lodge and have the opportunity to relax and enjoy a hearty dinner before your trek that begins in the morning.
After breakfast, you will be briefed on the details and safety protocols for the adventure ahead. The day’s trekking will take around 6 hours and is a challenging mix of navigating thick jungle and slippery, steep hillsides. After quietly pushing through the forest, you will be rewarded with the amazing experience of being able to sit amongst these giants for over an hour, observing their gentle nature, witnessing how they interact with one another and taking some pictures. After your time with the gorillas, you will head back to camp and will have the chance to go on an afternoon walk to the local community for a taste of culture. Witness some traditional dancing and enjoy some of their cuisine. Later you will return to your lodge for a well deserved rest and some dinner.
After a hearty breakfast, you will bid farewell to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, recollecting all the memories you have made with Uganda’s magnificent primates and then slowly make your way back to Kampala. You will have lunch in the city before being taken to the airport or your hotel, marking the end of your trip.
