Day by Day Overview
It’s a very early start for the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, situated in southwestern Uganda close to the Great Rift Valley. The journey is amazing since you will see several features as you drive through the countryside. Your vehicle will stop whenever you see something worth capturing on camera. Have your lunch in Mbarara and when you reach Bwindi, check-in to your accommodation.
Overnight: Engagi Lodge
Meal Plan: Lunch and dinner
Wake up very early for breakfast and continue to the park Headquarters to be oriented and meet your Ranger Guide. There you will be separated into groups of eight based on the gorilla family you are tracking. Bwindi has nine habituated gorilla groups today: Kahungye, Rushegura, Nkuringo, Kyaguriro, Mubare, Oruzogo, Bitukura, Habinyanja and Nshongi. Mountain gorilla tracking can take a few hours if not a whole day. Wherever you go, you will have a wonderful time with the gorillas. The trek is really a mysterious activity that will raise your hopes until you eventually meet the amazing mountain gorillas. It is fascinating observing them go about their routines, see the silverback play with the young ones, others resting and mothers feeding babies. You are allowed to take photos of them, however remember to keep the camera flash off.
Based on the time and your energy, you may continue for a village walk to interact with the Batwa people afterwards. These African pygmies live and survive in Bwindi forest. You will also visit the women’s handicraft shop, the traditional healer, a community school as well as observe the preparation of the local brew. If time allows, you will listen to their traditional stories and be entertained with cultural dance and songs as a gesture of thanking you for your visit. This will finally end this adventurous day within Bwindi. Head back to your lodge for your dinner and a good night’s rest.
