Staring and ending in Kampala, this safari takes you gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in south western Uganda. Bwindi is home to over 300 mountain gorillas, almost half of the world's gorilla population. Tracking to find a mountain gorilla family and then spending time with them watching them go about their day-to-day activities is a truly memorable adventure. After the trek, you will visit the Batwa, the original inhabitants of the forests in Bwindi, Mgahinga, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo. Most were forced out of the forests but without compensation or proper adjustment to the modern life. Then head off for relaxation on Lake Bunyonyi, with its 29 islands scattered across the water.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi is a big habitat for mountain gorillas in Uganda, harboring over 300 of them, which is almost half of the world’s gorilla population. While trekking, you will have an opportunity to be within meters of these magnificent apes, sharing in their daily lives and experiencing their day-to-day activities. Mountain gorillas are extremely rare with only an estimated 880 remaining in the wild. This is an experience you won’t soon forget!
Batwa Trail Experience
The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forests in Bwindi, Mgahinga, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo. Most were forced out of the forests without compensation or proper adjustment to the modern life.
Relaxation on Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi is framed by lush as well as green-terraced hills that reach a height of (2,200 – 2,478m). But it’s the 29 islands of various shapes and sizes scattered across the water that makes it most magical, you could admire all day.

This will be an eventful day and you need to wake up at around 6am. As you take breakfast, request the hotel to prepare your packed lunch just in case the trekking activity goes on past mid-day. The driver will take you to the park offices so that you are in time for the briefing from the park ranger-guide which starts at 7:30am. The briefing covers everything you must know about gorilla trekking including the gorilla groups in the sector, history of the forest and what to expect. After the briefing, you will be assigned a gorilla family along with 7 other travelers. The Park Guides will offer you a hiking stick and a chance to hire porters to help you with any heavy luggage/cameras. After everyone is assembled, you will begin tracking the primates.
Gorilla trekking can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family you are tracking and their location on the day of the trek. Once you get to them, you are allowed only one hour of observation. Use this time to study the group and individual members. Do not forget to take some videos and photos otherwise no one will know that you ever took part in such a fascinating activity. Please kindly note that mountain gorillas are wild animals and, as such, sightings cannot be guaranteed. However viewing success rates are over 90%. After spending time with the primates, you will be led back to the starting point for your certificate of participation. You will find our office guide waiting to take you back to the hotel for lunch and rest.
Late in the afternoon, you will be taken to visit the Batwa pygmies of Bwindi. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forests in Bwindi, Mgahinga, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo. Most were forced out of the forests but without compensation or proper adjustment to the modern life. The nature walk will offer you an opportunity to learn about their ancient ways of life and the struggles to adapt to modern life outside the forest.
After the Batwa trail, you will then proceed to Lake Bunyonyi, framed by lush as well as green-terraced hills that reach a height of (2,200 – 2,478m). But it’s the 29 islands of various shapes and sizes scattered across the water that makes it the most magical place – you could admire it all day.
