Murchison Falls National Park

The largest and oldest national park in Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park protects a vast expanse of unspoiled African savanna intercrossed by the great river Nile, the longest river in the world. It was named after the spectacular Murchison Falls where the mighty River Nile bursts thunderously through a small gorge in the Rift Escarpment and spectacularly drops over 40 meters below.

The park was established in 1926 as a game reserve, situated in Northwestern Uganda, on an area of 3,80 sq km and home to over 460 bird and 76 mammal species. Since the poaching of the 1980’s, the number of wildlife in the park has steadily increased and tourists often encounter large numbers of antelopes, elephants, giraffes and buffaloes. Fortunately the number of lions in the park has also increased and today the chances of seeing them have much increased. The great Nile itself is habitat to one of the largest populations of hippopotami and crocodiles in Africa, plus a great array of birds like the most sought after uncommon Shoebill stork.
