Incredible India, with its rich cultural heritage and stunning wilderness and wildlife is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world. Its spirituality is a beacon of hope that attracts travellers from all walks of life. Where some visit the country to experience its culture, others come to see exotic animals in the wilderness and embark on an Indian safari.
Tourists from neighbouring countries can travel over land to visit the country, but those across oceans and land masses are required to travel by air. We’ll take a look at some airlines, prices and major travel hubs from around the world.
Air India alone provides direct flights from Australia to New Delhi. Tourists can catch a direct flight to New Delhi from either Melbourne or Sydney. Direct flights cost around $1,000, whereas one-stop services would cost somewhere around $500. Direct flights between Australia and India are around 11/12 hours. Airlines with one-stop services usually stop at Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and take anywhere between 15 hours to a day and a half.
New Delhi is the only city that welcomes flights from all major New Zealand cities; Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson and Dunedin. Flights from Auckland are cheaper and cost around $1,010, whereas flights from Dunedin can be as high as $2,300.
Flights to India depart from either Cape Town Airport, or Johannesburg International Airport. There are no other direct flights from Africa to India. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and Qatar Airways provide one or two stop services to India’s major airports in New Delhi and Mumbai. These flights stop in Ethiopia or Malawi. Under normal circumstances, the flights take 13 hours to reach India.
Air Canada provides direct flights from Vancouver and Toronto, costing around $2,300. Airlines such as British Airways and Etihad Airways provide one-stop services that are much cheaper at $1,300.
The United States has a higher availability of flights from around 70 cities. Flights from Boston, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Burbank and San Francisco are the cheapest at $900. Flights from Oakland and California can cost around $500 with a one-stop service, which takes at least 17 hours to reach India. United Airlines offers direct flights from San Francisco and New York, with prices ranging from $900 to $1,200. Direct flights cover the distance between North America and India in around 15 hours.
Tourists can take direct flights from London to India, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic airlines. These flights take 9-10 hours to reach India for $500. Finnair, LOT Polish Airlines, British Airways and Aeroflot airlines all provide one-stop services. There are also direct flights available to other major Indian cities (Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi).
Foreigners entering India can get e-visa for five categories; Tourist, Business, Conference, Medical and Medical Attendant. A tourist can apply for an Indian visa online for one month, one year, or five years. Continuous stay on tourist visas are not allowed for more than 90 days, except for citizens from Canada, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom, for whom the limit is 180 days.
