Day by Day Overview
After breakfast, you drive to Machame Gate for registration. The trek begins through lush rainforest with tall trees, moss, and abundant wildlife. The trail can be muddy, but the gradual ascent allows a comfortable start. You arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon, where your crew prepares camp and dinner while you rest and enjoy the forest atmosphere.
Leaving the rainforest, the trail climbs steadily into heath and moorland zones. The vegetation changes, offering open views and fresh mountain air. As you gain altitude, Mount Meru becomes visible in the distance on clear days. You reach Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world, with impressive views of Kibo Peak.
This is a key acclimatization day. You hike uphill to Lava Tower at 4,600m, allowing your body to adjust to high altitude, before descending to Barranco Camp. The descent helps reduce altitude stress while improving acclimatization. Barranco Camp is set below the dramatic Barranco Wall and offers one of the most scenic camping locations on the mountain.
After breakfast, you climb the famous Barranco Wall. Though steep, it is not technical and offers exciting scrambling with rewarding views. The trail then crosses valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day allows additional acclimatization and rest in preparation for the summit push.
Today you ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes alpine desert with strong winds and cooler temperatures. Upon arrival, you rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare your gear. Your guide provides a detailed summit briefing before you sleep, as the summit climb begins around midnight.
Around midnight, you begin the challenging summit ascent. You hike steadily to Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. After photos and celebration at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp, located in the upper forest zone.
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out and receiving summit certificates, you are transferred back to Moshi or Arusha. This marks the end of an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
