Day by Day Overview
Upon arrival at the airport, one of our representatives will pick you up at the airport, brief you about the safari and then you proceed to Samburu National Reserve. Arrive in the late afternoon and check in at Samburu Sopa Lodge. Have lunch and a rest before an evening game drive. Return to the lodge as the day comes to an end.
Dinner and overnight at Samburu Sopa Lodge
Enjoy full day game drive in the reserve. Be on the lookout for special flora and fauna found here. Located 345 km from the capital Nairobi, Samburu is considered one of Kenya’s smallest but yet richest wildlife national parks. Bordered by the Ewaso Nyiro River to the south, which also separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve, Samburu Reserve lies within the arid and semi-arid climatic condition. The days are extremely hot and the nights are cold.
The reserve boasts of the ‘Samburu Six’ (rare northern specialist species) – the Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx (Samburu special), Guenther’s dik dik and the reticulated giraffe. The reserve is also home to large herds of elephants while predators like lion, cheetah and leopard can be spotted in this rugged terrain. Samburu National Reserve is also a fantastic birding spot with over 450 species of birds. That’s not all, you can also get a taste of the local traditions and culture by visiting a Samburu tribal village and support the community by purchasing crafts and beaded jewelry locally made by the Samburu people.

Breakfast at the lodge then check out and enjoy an en route game drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Along the way you will have a stunning view of the Rift Valley formed as result of land faulting. Arrive in time for lunch and check in at the lodge. After lunch and short relaxation, enjoy an afternoon game drive around the park. Lake Nakuru National Park is among Kenya’s finest national parks. Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, in the south western part of Kenya, surrounded by the woody and bushy grassland, lies this beautiful and captivating lake. The lake is 164 kms northwest of the capital city Nairobi making it easy to make a day trip out of the busy city and experience amazing encounters with wildlife.
Lake Nakuru Nakuru is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrating the flamingos and abundant wildlife it’s home to. It’s also one of the alkaline lakes found in the Rift Valley. The national park and the lake are most renowned for the tens of thousands of flamingos along it’s shores, which can be over a million at the peak depending on the conditions.
Predator species include lion, cheetah, leopard and hyenas. Other species include Rothschild’s giraffe (an endangered species), rhinos (both white and black species) and pythons. There are a small number of hippos which can be found along the reeds of the lake. Along with the waterbuck which is more common than in other parks, visitors might also see reedbuck and bushbuck. The park is a spectacular place for birdwatching with over 400 bird species. Birdwatchers can hope to see the African fish eagle, goliath heron, verreaux’s eagle, kingfisher and the abundance of flamingos.

Breakfast at the lodge, check out and drive to Maasai Mara National Park. Upon arrival check in thereafter have lunch. Afterwards proceed for an afternoon game drive until sunset. Situated in the southwest of Kenya, the Maasai Mara is undisputedly one of Africa’s best known and Kenya’s most famous wildlife destination. It is a must visit destination for almost every traveler coming to Kenya. Together with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, the two parks form Africa’s most incredible, diverse and spectacular eco-systems and possibly the world’s top safari big game viewing ecosystem.
The terrain of Maasai Mara is classic savannah and has a fairly consistent landscape of open grasslands. This makes it easy to spot wildlife and the Great Wildebeest Migration, which occurs annually between July and September. During this time, close to 1.5 million wildebeest, antelopes and zebra migrate from the Serengeti (Tanzania) to the Maasai Mara (Kenya) in search of food and water. However, the migratory routes greatly depend on the weather patterns and other factors. The reserve also boasts of around 500 bird species including ostrich, secretary bird, cranes, eagles, marabou stock and vultures. The Maa community is the largest community in this geographical area. A visit to the Maasai village to learn more about their culture and traditions will be a bonus and a great experience as you will interact with the local Maasai community.
Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge
Choose between the three options depending on your flexibility and preference:
Option 1: Have breakfast and then proceed for full day game viewing with packed lunch boxes in Kenya’s finest wildlife reserve – the Maasai Mara National Reserve searching for the big five and other animals.
Option 2: You may opt for an early morning game drive searching for big cats making a kill then return to the lodge to freshen up and have breakfast. Spend the rest of the morning at your leisure either swimming, reading a book or just relaxing. Later have lunch and proceed for another afternoon/evening game drive in search of the big five and other animals.
Option 3: You may choose to go an optional Hot Air Balloon Safari Experience (USD 490 per person.) Ideally, you will be picked up early in the morning from your lodge and transferred to the launch Site. The whole experience takes about an hour and a half. From there, you can proceed with game drives with packed lunch until the evening combing the wild in search of the big five and other wildlife. You can also visit a Maasai Mara Cultural Village to learn more about their culture and traditions (USD 30 Per Person). Return to the lodge for a shower, relaxation and thereafter dinner.
Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge
This will be the final day of the safari. It’s time to bid you farewell as you depart Kenya, hopefully soon to return. Enjoy an early morning game drive then return back to the lodge for breakfast and preparation. Leave for Nairobi with en-route game drive along the way. Once in Nairobi, a Premier Safaris Travel representative will meet you at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you will connect with your flight home and bid you goodbye.
