Day by Day Overview

Today starts with a glimpse into the wonders of the rural Kenyan lifestyle as you drive through village streets past locals herding their livestock, transporting goods on donkey-led carts and selling their hand-made cloths in rustic stalls. Make your way to Ngong, a developing area in the traditional Maasai homelands to visit the Women’s Empowerment Center. The center was started by Mary, a social worker who developed a program to help mothers so they could keep their families together. The women at the center undertake vocational and lifestyle training, are assisted with micro finance and are given support when opening small businesses. The results have been phenomenal, helping move the single mothers from poverty to independence. Spend the remainder of the day with Mary to learn about her vision for the center while you get the chance to meet some of the mothers who are involved in the inspirational program.

Spend the day with Kenyan grandmothers who care for their grandchildren among other generations of their family for the chance to understand how together we can help break the cycle of poverty. Visit a pig farm owned by one of the grandmothers as she proudly explains how her bio-gas system powers her home, one of the many One Horizon energy programs impacting the lives of the Kenyan people. Spend part of the day with the grandmothers as they cook traditional meals for their families and narrate their wonderful stories of life, change and progress.

Spend an amazing day with the warriors and women of a traditional Maasai tribe. It starts with a song and dance welcome where the wife of a village elder will offer to dress you in traditional Maasai cloth. Venture into the bush with her son, a young warrior who will share his stories of what it’ is like being a man in Maasai society. Join other men who are training for their rite of passage as they explain how they will go into the hills to complete qualifying tasks before they reach the circumcision ceremony. Take part in the challenge by trying to throw a heavy club 100 meters over an acacia tree as the warriors have to do. Sit with the men and women of the tribe as they share stories of their fascinating culture with you before the women teach you how to make some traditional jewellery.
