You will be met by one of our representatives at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and taken to your hotel in Moshi for the evening. You can expect a short briefing from your guide before going over some of the details of the trek and covering the operation of all the major equipment, with specific attention to the emergency equipment. Enjoy some dinner before relaxing for the remainder of the evening.
Overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge: dinner
In the morning you will drive from your hotel in Moshi to the Machame gate for registration and a chance to meet the rest of the climbing team. You will begin your climb, trekking for 5 – 6 hours, over a distance of 11 kilometres/6 miles. You will enjoy a picnic lunch around noon as you make your way through the rainforest before arriving at your campsite for the evening.
Overnight at Machame Hut | Elevation: 1,743m – 3,000m
Today will make your way up a short but rather steep rocky trail, leading you to the next campsite. A slow hike with with frequent stops, allowing you to acclimatise and catch your breath. You will walk through the moorland zone, crossing various ridges and enjoying magnificent views of Shira Peak and Mount Meru. Hike for 5 kilometres/3 miles before reaching the camp and having some lunch.
Overnight at Shira Cave Camp | Elevation: 3,000m – 3,750m
Today you will be walking through the alpine desert on a 10 kilometre/6 mile hike taking around 6 – 8 hours. Begin by climbing over large boulders before a steady uphill climb to Lava Tower, a 150 meter high volcanic plug that juts out the side of the mountain. Stop for lunch around noon before descending slightly on a winding trail to your next camp.
Overnight at Baranco Camp | Elevation: 3,750m – 3,940m
Today you will have a shorter hike as you make your way up the Barranco Wall for some tricky climbing as you hold onto boulders to make your way along some of the steep paths. At the top of the wall you will be able to look down into the Barranco Valley for spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Make your way up and down the rocky trail to the Karanga Valley, the last water point on the mountain. Reach your campsite on the top of the ridge where you can enjoy a tasty lunch.
Overnight at Karanga Camp | Elevation: 3,940m – 3,995m
Today you will continue the steep hike upwards, making your way past a lot of boulders and shattered rock as you continue crossing the alpine desert. You will pass a steep ridge until you reach a rocky section where you will find your next camp situated alongside steep rock faces. Relax for the rest of the day as you prepare for an early push to the summit in the morning.
Overnight at Barafu Hut | Elevation: 3,995m – 4,600m
You will wake up around 11:00 pm and have some tea and snacks before heading for the summit around midnight. The climb begins by crossing some steep rocky paths before zigzagging towards the crater rim. Reach Stella Point around 06:00 am for an amazing sunrise before your final push to Uhuru Peak. Reach the top of the roof of Africa and experience the excitement and joy of accomplishing your goal as you take in the magnificent views. Relax for a short while and take some photos before descending back down the mountain. Reach Barafu Camp for a rest and some brunch before continuing down to Mweka Hut for the evening.
Overnight at Mweka Hut | Elevation: 4,600m – 5,895m – 3,100m
Today after breakfast you will join your climbing crew for some group photos and sing the traditional Kilimanjaro songs. You will then begin your final descent through the rainforest as you make your way to Mweka Gate. As you pass through the forest, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife including the beautiful birds that sit in the canopy above you. Arrive at the gate and collect your summit certificate before driving to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower and refreshing Kilimanjaro beer.
Overnight at Weru Weru River Lodge | Elevation: 3,100m – 1,640m
In the morning you will make your way back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back after an amazing trekking safari up the highest peak in Africa.
