Our safari guide will pick you up from Entebbe Airport (or hotel) and transfer you to Ngamba Island, which is approximately 23 km south-east of Entebbe. The short boat ride to Ngamba is about 45 minutes, crossing the equator on water as you move from the northern to the southern hemisphere. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in October 1998 to care for orphaned chimpanzees rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It forms part of the Koome group of islands located in Lake Victoria (also includes Nsazi, Kiimi, Koome, Bulago and Damba islands). The sanctuary is home to over 50 orphaned chimpanzees, many of which were rescued from poachers and are unlikely to survive reintroduction to the wild. Enjoy chimpanzee watching while you are here and see how they feed and interact with one another. In the evening we head to the capital city, Kampala, for dinner and overnight stay at your chosen lodge or hotel.
Wake up early morning and after breakfast our Uganda safari tour guide will be ready to take you on the next journey which is a long day of travelling along the Kampala-Mbarara-Masaka-Kabale highway. Stop on the way at the Uganda equator before proceeding to Mbarara via Igongo Cultural Heritage Centre where you may have lunch. Continue to Kabale, where beautiful raised landscapes overlook Kabale, and finally make it to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the evening. Have dinner and overnight at your choice of accommodation.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a natural bio-diverse mountainous area in southwestern Uganda. The impenetrable primeval Bwindi is home to many of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, which feed on roots, leaves and fruits from the park’s many tree and fern species. Restricted numbers of viewing permits help protect the endangered gorilla families in this deep forest. In the park, rough paths weave amid the extremely heavy dense forests, which are home to many butterflies and over 350 bird species, including 23 endemics (90% of all Albertine Rift endemics) such as the short-tailed warbler and Blue-headed sunbird as well as seven IUCN red data listed species.
Early in the morning, after your breakfast, pack your lunch, gorilla trekking equipment including jackets, rain coats, gumboots, walking stick and cap. Our guide will take you to the briefing headquarters for the gorilla trekking guidelines. Thereafter, along with the tour ranger, you’ll be welcomed into the thick Bwindi forest. The gorilla trek takes about 2 – 8 hours and when you encounter with the mountain gorillas, you spend one hour with them watching them as they groom one another, lay nests and more. Afterwards head back to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Early morning, check out from the hotel, and be prepared for the journey back to Kampala, or your preferred destination as per prior arrangement. The Kabale-Mbarara-Kampala highway takes you back to Kampala with lunch on the way in Mbarara.
