One of our friendly drivers will arrive to pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and take you to Arusha for dinner and then to the hotel of your choice. Arusha is situated at the foot of Mount Meru, Africa’s 5th highest mountain. Although Arusha is not the most exciting or beautiful destination in Tanzania, you will have a chance to taste some authentic Tanzanian cuisine and have an early night before your exciting safari adventure begins!
After breakfast, your guide will collect you from your lodge, before proceeding to Tarangire National Park. With a game viewing area that is roughly ten times the size of nearby Manyara, the park is most famous for its elephant migration, exquisite bird watching opportunities, and quiet, authentic safari atmosphere, surrounded by beautiful baobab trees. After a morning of game viewing, enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the Tarangire River. In the afternoon, we will proceed to our tented lodge. Spend some time by the pool, enjoy a delicious dinner, and a get good night’s sleep at the lodge.
After breakfast today we head to a highly anticipated destination, the Great Serengeti. In the Maasai language, “serengeti” means “endless plains”. The park stretches for over 15,000 square kilometers, and is quite simply one of the most magnificent wildlife sanctuaries in the world— unparalleled in natural beauty and wilderness. From vast, open plains with idyllic, golden sunsets, to steamy riverbanks and towers of granite boulders, the Serengeti throbs and pulses with life.
In the afternoon we will head to the central area, known as Seronera, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and attracts an abundance of wildlife. We’ll arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive, exploring the park and all that it has to offer. With its wide-open spaces, bright blue skies and breathtaking landscapes, you’ll soon understand why the Serengeti is so popular. Large prides of lions laze in the long grasses; families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trumpet to each other across the plains, and giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland and the whole range of African wildlife present themselves in awe-inspiring numbers. At sunset we will proceed to our tented camp in the heart of the famous Seronera Valley.
Waking up in the southern part of the Serengeti is something really special. Sights, sounds and smells of Africa are all around us, and ahead is a full day of adventure in the world’s most famous national park. Today we will have a full day game drive from the southern to the central part of the Serengeti in search of the big five. Besides the big five, other wildlife in the area includes zebra, wildebeest, various species of gazelles and antelopes, giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, hippopotamus, crocodiles and some primate species such as vervet monkeys and olive baboons. It is also a bird-watcher’s paradise, with a total of 505 bird species.
Today we make our way into the Mara area of the Serengeti in search of one of the greatest wildlife shows on the planet, the annual Great Migration. Every year around 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra (along with other antelope) gather up their young and start their long trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, further north to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, following the rains in search of food and water. Their journey runs in a clockwise circle and the animals cover a distance of around 3000km, a tough journey that takes the lives of an estimated 250 000 wildebeest as they forge across rivers and suffer constant attacks from crocodiles, lions and other predators.
There can be no guarantee of encountering the migration, as their exact route is never known, and it is incredible that a million animals can disappear into the vast savannah. We will do our best to follow the migration as it heads northwards, moving with the herds to experience their trials and tribulations. After a full day on safari, you will return to your camp for dinner and a good night’s rest.
After breakfast, we proceed with an en-route game drive to the central part of the Serengeti. This park is well-known for its healthy stock of resident wildlife, particularly the ‘big five’: lion, leopard, elephant, buffaloes, and rhino.
At sunrise, we start our game drive marveling at the stunning scenery, ever changing light and always entertaining wildlife, searching for big cats as they stalk their prey. We proceed with an en-route game drive from central Serengeti towards Ngorongoro Conservation area, spotting wildlife along the way.
Livestock belonging to the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe graze alongside wild animals in this area, an unusual and fascinating sight to witness. This is the only area in Tanzania where you will find wildlife, human beings and domestic animals living in such close proximity. Besides the incredible landscapes and wildlife, guests can also visit the Hominin fossils, in the Olduvai Gorge that date back millions of years. These were discovered by Dr. Mary Leakey, and are well worth a visit. In the late afternoon we will ascend the crater and drive to Ndutu area for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, we’ll make an early start, as we descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro crater for an incredible game drive today. With its abundant water, excellent grazing and natural protection due to densely vegetated walls, the crater provides shelter to over 25000 animals, including the endangered black rhino. We descend 2,000 feet to the crater floor to explore this natural zoological park, and observe an extraordinary variety of wildlife: elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, zebra, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, reedbuck, and buffalo. The lovely crested crane (similar to a peacock) can be found in great profusion here and maybe you’ll spot a bat-eared fox, if you’re very lucky. The balance of predator and prey in this extraordinary ecosystem is so precise that animals seldom leave.
Lunch will be served at a picnic site inside the crater. In the afternoon we will drive to Arusha/Kilimanjaro International Airport for our flight to Zanzibar Island or back home.
