Day by Day Overview

Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera, then begin a 5–6 hour drive through the Afar lowlands toward Hamed Ela. Along the way, stop at Lake Afdera, a stunning salt lake with warm, mineral-rich waters – perfect for a refreshing swim. Enjoy lunch while taking in the striking desert scenery. Continue to Hamed Ela, the gateway to the Danakil Depression. In the evening, visit Lake Asale, where endless salt flats glow golden at sunset. Relax in the peaceful surroundings and enjoy the breathtaking landscape.

After breakfast, drive to the extraordinary Dallol Depression, located 125 meters below sea level. Explore its surreal, multicolored geothermal formations created by intense volcanic and hydrothermal activity. Visit nearby salt flats and observe camel caravans transporting salt blocks using centuries-old methods. In the afternoon, take a four-hour drive to Erta Ale Volcano, crossing lava fields and desert terrain. After an early dinner at the campsite, hike for about one hour to the volcano’s summit. Witness the dramatic sight of molten lava glowing beneath the night sky – an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Before sunrise, revisit the lava lake to witness its fiery glow in the early morning light. After that, return to camp for breakfast. Then, begin your journey back to Semera. Drive to Afdera, and then take an asphalt road to Semera Airport. Take a moment to reflect on your remarkable adventure through one of Earth’s most extreme landscapes before your flight back to Addis Ababa.
