This adventurous overland expedition takes you into Zambia's serene and beautiful Kafue and Lochinvar National Parks. This is the ideal safari for either groups or individuals interested in travelling into the wilderness in our comfortable overland trucks and staying in campsites. The trip includes local village tours, a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls, four days exploring Kafue National Park with various activities, a full day of cultural activities in Musungwa village in Namwala Game Area, spending a day at a community school, and two days in Lochinvar National Park.

Day by Day

Day 1:  Start of Expedition - Livingstone / Local Activities

  • 07:00–07:30 - Breakfast
  • 07:30–08:00 - Travel to the Mukuni village
  • 08:00–12:30 - Activities; village tour, visit a traditional healer/African doctor, visit craft market
  • 12:30–13:30 - Lunch break with traditional dishes
  • 13:30–13-50 - Travel to the mighty Victoria Falls 
  • 14:00–15.30 - Enjoy a tour of the Victoria Falls
  • 15:30–15:40 - Leave for Avani Victorial Falls Resort Hotel, mock traditional village
  • 15:40–17:00 - Tour the mock traditional village and see examples of a traditional African lifestyle, possible option to have your hair braided
  • 17:10–17:30 - Return to Nyembe Kaoma Backpackers for dinner and overnight

Day 2:  Livingstone - Kafue National Park

  • 05:30–06:10 - Wake up call, thereafter breakfast
  • 06:20–09:30 - Depart for Kalomo travelling north on a good tarmac road, covering about 120 kms
  • 09:30–09:40 - Arrive in Kalomo town, the first colonial capital city of Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. Buy all the necessary groceries and mineral water in preparation to hit the dust road to the wildness of Kafue National Park, entering the park at Dundumezi south gate, some 80 kms from Kalomo
  • 12:00–12:10 - Enter the Kafue National Park at the southern tip of the park at Dundumwezi gate
  • 12:10–16:10 - Commence game drive along the recently upgraded gravel road and head to Nazhila Plains inside the Kafue National Park southern area to see plenty of wildlife
    16:30 - Arrive at Ngoma Camp and Campsite

Day 3:  Kafue National Park / Elephant Orphanage

  • 07:00–07: 30 - Breakfast
  • 07:30–10:00 - Leave for the Ngoma game area in the southern region of the park, exploring the Kafue National Park on the way
  • 10:00 - Arrive at the Elephant Orphanage within the KNP-South where you'll see the marvellous work being done in looking after vulnerable elephants, a donation in kind is welcome to support the work being done in conserving elephants, which will go towards medicines to be used for caring for these elephants, food supplements for the elephants, safety working clothing for the care givers
  • 13:30–14:30 - Lunch break at the elephant orphanage and rest
  • 14:30–15:20 - Travel to the Ngoma Campsite inside the KNP-South
  • 15:20–15.30 - Arrive at Ngoma Campsite and prepare for camping
  • 15:30–17:00 - Do a bit of a walking safari around the camping site
  • 17:00–18:00 - Relax and prepare a camp fire
  • 21:00 - Retire to bed

Days 4-5:  Kafue National Park / Game Viewing

  • 07:00–07:30 - Breakfast
  • 07:30–10:00 - Leave for game viewing, using the various loops especially along the river to see the wildlife
  • 17:00–18:00 - Relax and prepare a camp fire
  • 21:00 - Retire to bed

Day 5:  Kafue National Park / Village Visit

  • 07:00–07:30 - Breakfast 
  • Continue exploring the southern part of Kafue National Park, around the Ngoma Game Management Area, visit Musungwa village in the Namwala Game Management Area to appreciate the rural way of life the local people in Zambia live, visit the Iyanda hotsprings, travel over the hydro generating bridge and enter Itezhi Tezhi town for a varied tour of this mountainous town, visit a African market, the residential area, a district hospital and shops
  • 17:00–18:00 - Relax and prepare a camp fire
  • 21:00 - Retire to bed

Day 6:  Kafue National Park / Mukambi Lodge

  • 07:00–07: 30 - Breakfast and leave Ngoma Campsite for the the Kafue National Park North Game Management Area
  • 08:30–12:30 - Travel along the spinal gravel road winding along the Lake Itezhi Tezhi heading to Chunga, see plenty wild animals along the road drinking from the Kafue River
  • 11:30 - Arrive at Mukambi Lodge for two days stay camping
  • Optional: Do afternoon boat cruise on Lake Itezhi Tezhi
  • 17:00–18:00 - Relax and prepare a campfire
  • 21:00 - Retire to bed

Day 7:  Kafue National Park / Game Viewing 

  • 07:00–07: 30 – Breakfast
  • Continue with exploring the Kafue National Park around the KNP-North Game Management Area
  • 17-00–18:30 - Arrive at Zonga Safari Lodge camping site.
  • 19:00–20:00 - Dinner
  • 20-00–22:00 - Relaxing

Day 8:  Kafue National Park / Nahubwe Safari Lodge

  • 07:00–07: 30 – Breakfast
  • 07:30 – Leave Zonga Safari Lodge campsite, travelling eastward towards Lusaka on a good tarmac road for about 60 km, then turn south at the Itezhi Tezhi turn off road, heading to Itezhi Tezhi town (110km on part tarmac and part grave road)
  • 10:00 – Arrive in Nahubwe village in the Namwala Game Management area and camp at Nahubwe Safari Lodge by the shore of lake Itezhi–Tezhi
  • 12:30–14:00 - Lunch at Nahubwe Safari Lodge
  • 14:00–17:00 - Afternoon bush walking safari
  • 17:30–19:30 - Return to Nahubwe Safari Lodge campsite for dinner
  • 20:00–22:00 - Evening meeting and briefing by the village elders concerning the history of village
  • 22:30 - Retire to sleep

Day 9: Kafue National Park / Nahubwe Community School 

  • 07:00–07:30 – Breakfast
  • 07:30 - Leave for Nahubwe Community School to see the pupils learning and join the pupils in the school assembly, deliver a message of encouragement
  • 08:30–10:30 - Split into groups to be with the pupils in different classes and assist in teaching and other classroom activities
  • 10:30–11:00 - Tea break
  • 11-00–12:30 - Distribution of any material assistance to the pupils
  • 12-30–14:00 - Lunch break at Nahubwe Safari Lodge
  • 14-00–16:00 - Return to school and assist in afternoon extra-curricular activities
  • 17:30–19:30 - Return to Nahubwe Safari Lodge campsite for dinner
  • 20:00–22:00 - Evening entertainment with Zambian traditional dance
  • 22:30 - Retire to sleep

Day 10: Nahubwe Safari Lodge / Lochinvar National Park

  • 07:00–07:30 - Breakfast
  • 07:30 - Leave Nahubwe Safari Lodge, travelling southwards to Itezhi Tezhi town (30km on part tarmac and part grave road)
  • 08:20 - Arrive in Itezhi Tezhi and take the Itezhi Tezhi – Namwala gravel road (60 km) which involves crossing the Kafue River at a place called Banga village
  • 11:30–12:00 - Arrive in Namwala and take a 30 minute lunch break
  • 12:00–14:00 - Travel on a good tarmac road and arrive at Nico village about 50 kms from Namwala, before turning east on the dusty Monze road heading to the Lochinvar National Park
  • 14:00–16:30 hrs - Arrive at Lochinvar National Park in Monze East and camp at Lochinvar Lodge
  • 16:30–17:00 hrs - Visit the Gwisho Hots Springs inside the park
  • 17:30 - Return to Lochinvar Lodge campsite for an overnight

Day 11: Lochinvar National Park / Game Viewing 

  • 07:00–07: 30 - Breakfast
  • 07:30–12:00 - Game drives and bird safari
  • 14:00–17:00 - Seeing various heritage sites inside the park incuding the Baobab tree and the drum rocks
  • 15:00 - Visit to the local Lochinvar community primary school who live in boarding and meet the vulnerable school pupils and assist where possible
  • 17:30 Return to the Lochinvar Lodge campsite for an overnight

Day 12:  Lochinvar National Park - Livingstone

  • 07:00–07: 30 - Breakfast and exit Lochinvar National Park
  • 07:30–08:20 - Travel to Monze 55 kms (16 kms on gravel road, 39 kms on tarmac road) to join the Lusaka – Livingstone main road highway
  • 08:20–08:40 - Buy various groceries and mineral water
  • 08:40–09:30 - View the Fort Monze heritage site (optional)
  • 09:30–12:00 - Arrive in Choma, the political capital city of Southern Province
  • 12:00–15:00 - Tour of Choma Museum and take a lunch break
  • 15:00–17:30 - Arrive in Livingstone to camp at Nyembe Kaoma Backpackers

Day 13:  End of Expedition - Livingstone

07:00–07: 30 – Breakfast at Nyembe Kaoma Backpackers
