Tour Overview
Marangu Route is also known as the “Coca Cola” or “tourist” route. It is the easiest and shortest route to the summit. This is also the only route with the comforts of sleeping huts at every campsite with solar lights and comfortable beds. The huts are communal, and the bunks have a sponge mattress and pillow. This route is usually done in 5 days but can be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi.

You will be surprised the path doesn’t LOOK steep but hike turns into a major effort. The landscape can change dramatic, windswept with big clouds rolling or open. It’s really fun this part. Looking at Kibo the whole time, you will see the challenge ahead for you tonight. Dinner, rest and prepare for the summit climb.

Kibo Hut
You sleep in dormitories with quite restricted facilities. At night all final climb preparation of the Summit are done. Porters help you repack any items only the necessary.
Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft
Walking distance: 5.5 km(up) + 15 km Time: 10hrs
Wake up at 11.00 and 11.30 pm. Get ready with your gear and have break fast. Around midnight start the hike to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point located on the crater rim. You will see strings of little lights for climbers ahead of you. As steep as the slope is the path itself isn’t that bad. Take all the time you need. There are two landmarks that are resting points only minutes. Then 1:30hrs after leaving the cave rocks appear on the path a bit slippery called Jamaican Rocks. Its another 1:30hrs to reach Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment. The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. Going slowly “pole pole” and an optimistic attitude will get you there!
Descend for Lunch at Kibo Huts. You have no choice but to pack up your gear and keep going 3 hrs to the Horombo Huts.
Walking Highlights
• Uhuru Peak • Crater rim • Glaciers • Sunrise at Africa’s highest point • Breathtaking views.
