Start your adventure with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, a peaceful lakeside city on the shores of Lake Tana. Once you arrive, enjoy a boat excursion on the lake, the source of the Blue Nile, visiting ancient island monasteries that date back centuries. Observe traditional papyrus boats and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of Ethiopia’s largest lake. In the afternoon, drive to the stunning Blue Nile Falls (Tis Issat), meaning “Smoking Water.” Witness the dramatic cascades plunging into the gorge – one of the country’s most impressive natural landmarks.

After breakfast, take a short flight to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia. Explore the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring castles and palaces built in the 17th century, including Fasilides’ Palace. Next, visit Fasilides’ Bath, still used during the Timkat festival, and then explore Qusquam Church, associated with Empress Mentewab. End your day at the magnificent Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its beautifully painted ceiling adorned with angelic faces.

Drive north to Debark, the gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. After park registration and meeting your trekking crew, begin your hike toward Sankaber Camp, which is situated at approximately 3,200 meters above sea level. The trek offers sweeping mountain views and excellent opportunities to see endemic wildlife, especially the iconic Gelada baboons grazing along the escarpments.

Today’s trek takes you from Sankaber to Geech Camp (3,600 m), a scenic journey lasting about 5–7 hours. Along the route, pass the Jinbar River and Waterfall, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and deep valleys. In the afternoon, hike to Imet Gogo, one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Simien Mountains, offering panoramic vistas over rugged landscapes and distant peaks.
Overnight: Camping at Geech
Enjoy a morning walk around the spectacular Jinbar Waterfall, often referred to as “Ethiopia’s Grand Canyon” due to its vast, dramatic scenery. After soaking in the views, descend and drive back to Gondar for rest and relaxation following your mountain adventure.

Fly to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s spiritual heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Begin exploring the first group of rock-hewn churches, which were carved entirely from solid rock in the 12th century. Visit Bet Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, along with Bet Mariam, Bet Meskel, and other nearby churches. Learn about their architectural significance and the history behind their construction brilliance and deep religious significance.
Overnight: Hiltop Lodge
Continue your visit with the second group of churches, including Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Amanuel, and Bet Abba Libanos, each unique in design and symbolism. Later, fly back to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon, explore key landmarks in the city, such as the National Museum (home of Lucy), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the panoramic Entoto Hills, which offer stunning views of the capital.

Fly to Semera, then drive into the remote and striking Afar Region. En route, stop at Lake Afdera for lunch and enjoy a refreshing swim in its mineral-rich waters. Continue to Hamed Ela, a desert settlement. In the evening, walk across the vast salt flats of Lake Asale and enjoy a magical sunset over the shimmering landscape.

Embark on an early morning excursion to the surreal Dalol Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Explore its vibrant geothermal formations, salt canyons, and sulfur springs, and observe traditional salt mining by the local Afar people. In the afternoon, drive toward Erta Ale Volcano. Begin a night trek to the crater to witness its continuously active lava lake, a rare and unforgettable natural phenomenon.
Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale Volcano
After watching the sunrise over Erta Ale, descend and drive back to Semera, then continue to Mekele. From there, travel to the Hawzen area to visit remarkable Tigray rock-hewn churches, including Cherkos Church and Medhane Alem Adi Kesho.

Today, explore the dramatic Gheralta Mountains. Visit the iconic Abuna Yemata Guh, which is reached by a challenging but rewarding climb, offering stunning views and ancient frescoes. Continue to Maryam Korkor and St. George Churches, renowned for their cliff-top locations and historic murals. Return to Hawzen in the evening.
