Day by Day Overview
After breakfast, meet your guide at 8:00am in the lobby for a briefing about your upcoming safari. Shortly after getting acquainted, you will transfer to Lake Mburo National Park (approx. 3 hrs drive), and have a game drive as you enter the park. After lunch enjoy a tranquil two-hour boat voyage (optional). Keep an eye out for crocodiles, buffaloes and hippos as well as colorful kingfishers, magnificent fish eagles, hammerkops and their enormous nests. The day ends with dinner and overnight at a comfortable lodge.
Drive to Bwindi Forest with lunch en route. You will have a pit stop at the Biharwe eclipse monument for a brief indulgence in the historic stories of how the total eclipse of the sun caused a King of Bunyoro to abandon all his assets, sighting a scourge. The rest of the journey is a smooth one with beautiful landscapes in sight, local fruit and vegetable markets by the roadside, and friendly locals going about their business. The day ends with an overnight stay at a comfortable lodge.
It’s time to trek and find the gorillas. Set off to the departure point for a full briefing and to meet your gorilla trek guide and armed guards. At this point, you will be divided into small groups of 8 and start the trek. The hiking is through thick and lush rainforest and the services of a porter do come in handy during the trek. With your guide using a machete to clear a path and assist you up and down steep terrain, when you find the gorilla family, spend an hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat – an amazing and unforgettable experience. The day ends with dinner and overnight at lodge.
We will drive back to Entebbe on this day. Depending on your scheduled flight, there are options of taking part in either a community visit or golden monkey hike in the Mgahinga Forest before we head back. The hike can take up to 5 hours and it may seem anticlimactic after a gorilla trek but these little creatures are well worth a visit. The options to have an activity may be possible only if you are flying out through Kigali International Airport.
