In the morning you will drive to Dinsho, stopping at Awash River and Lake Ziway for a chance to see some of the aquatic birds along the way. You will then have some lunch in Shashemene before continuing on to Dinsho, arriving in the afternoon. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a short hike through the northern part of the Bale Mountains National Park. In the evening you will make your way to your hotel in Goba where you can enjoy a delicious dinner. Highlights of the day included Lake Ziway and its birdlife as well as the mountain nyala and Menelik bushbuck that are often seen.
Overnight at Wabe Shebelle Hotel
In the morning you will have a hearty breakfast before making your way to the Sanetti Plateau for a day of hiking among the Afro-alpine moorland at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Later you will drive along Africa’s highest road, passing the summit of Ethiopia’s second highest mountain. The Sanetti Plateau is home to amazingly diverse array of unique plant species and is estimated to support an incredible biomass of 8,800 pounds of rodents per hectare, which in turn attracts some stunning raptors. If you are lucky, you may also see the Ethiopian wolf, the world’s rarest canid. The plateau is also home to various Afrotropical birds breeding grounds.
Overnight at Wabe Shebelle Hotel
Today you will make your way into one of Ethiopia’s largest remaining forests, the Harenna Forest. The slope of the southern escarpment of the Bale Mountains descends steeply from 3,200m to around 2,000m within a distance of 8 km’s, producing a rapid and spectacular change in landscape. You will be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains and surrounding forest from the Bale Mountain Lodge. You may also see the Bale monkeys that inhabit the trees in the area. Wild coffee is harvested to the south of the lodge and delicious Bale honey is collected by the locals from the hives in the canopy which you can sample while at the lodge.
Overnight at Wabe Shebelle Hotel
After breakfast you will head back to Addis Ababa, stopping for an en-route lunch in Assela. You will arrive in Addis Ababa in the late afternoon and have an opportunity to enjoy some shopping for souvenirs before your departure. Depending on the time of your flight, you can enjoy a final Ethiopian dinner before being taken to the airport to catch your flight.
