“Jambo! We’re Ann and Abu, founders of Long Way Expeditions, Tanzania’s first locally-owned responsible travel company. The aim of Long Way Expeditions is to provide our guests with safari expeditions and great experiences, always taking into consideration individual interests. Having acquired a wealth of previous experience in tourism, a young Tanzanian couple, Ann and Abu, started up the first Tanzanian responsible travel company in 2017. Our team comprises Tanzanian nationals. Besides having a profound knowledge of our country’s rich wildlife and diverse scenery, we always care for our precious environment and social fabric by supporting local initiatives.
My journey started when I finished my secondary education and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in tourism since I had a passion in tourism. I enrolled in tourism college and obtained an Advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism. My first job was as a lodge receptionist in Arusha in 2005 before building myself up to lodge manager in 2010 where by I worked until 2016. I met my husband in 2007 and as we came from very humble backgrounds, we had to work very hard for more than a decade in the hospitality industry to save money to start our own tour company. I am a wife and mother of three, two daughters and a son.
My passion for nature and wildlife led me to quit my job as a hotel manager and join team Long Way Expeditions as a senior reservation officer. I have a wide knowledge of Tanzania and Kenya’s attractions. My best safari moment was in Eastern Serengeti at night when a family of lions killed a male buffalo just outside the tent! Allow me to tailor make your safari memories in our amazing country.
I was born and raised in the small village of Kilole at the foot of Usambara mountain only 1hr30 from the Indian Ocean. When I was a child I saw my older brothers swimming in the Pangani river where we often spotted crocodiles or hunted small birds and dik-dik at the nearby forest. That’s when my passion for nature and wildlife started.
After I finished my secondary education I moved to Arusha. Knowing that Arusha is a tourist hub due to its many attractions, mountains peaks and wildlife parks, I knew it was my dreamland.I have worked as a swimming pool attendant, amateur football player, waiter, youth football coach and now safari driver guide and owner of Long Way Expeditions Ltd.
It was indeed…. a Long Way to get where we are now.
