Overview
Discover this incredible country in the company of Letaka Safaris, Botswana’s premier mobile safari operator, with our strong focus on the quality of our guides. Originally all our safaris were owner-guided but the company has now grown to employ a further seven of Botswana’s most highly experienced mobile safari guides. We offer small group scheduled safari departures as well as private and tailor-made safaris to suit individual guests needs from birding and photographic to self-drive and guiding courses.
About Us
Letaka Safaris is a citizen-owned safari company that has been operating in Botswana since October 2000. The founding directors, known locally as the Letaka Brothers, have over 40 years combined guiding experience and have been guiding safaris full-time in Botswana since the mid-90’s. With our strong focus on quality guiding, we have a close association with Okavango Guiding School, a training facility which we created to elevate the standard of guiding in Botswana. Many of Botswana’s top guides pass through Okavango Guiding School’s doors at one time or another and we are proud to continue this initiative to create a guiding fraternity that stands head and shoulders above others.
Letaka Safaris offers scheduled safari departures as well as private and tailor-made safaris. The majority of the safaris are semi-luxury mobile safaris meaning that there is a team that sets up camp ahead of time and most safaris would include at least three locations. We do also provide privately guided lodge safaris where we drive groups from one luxury camp to another and in so doing having one guide throughout the stay in the various lodges.
Apart from the conventional wildlife viewing safaris Letaka Safaris offers specialized birding safaris. The company is recognized as “The” birding safari company and is the first company in Botswana to offer scheduled departures specifically for birders.
Our Team
As well as our professional guides, we have a back up team consisting of a chef and camp hands who are there to make the safari even more enjoyable. The camp staff set up and break down camp as required as well as carrying our various daily camp chores ensuring our guests enjoy total relaxation on safari.
Our Tents
Our accommodation is in 3m² wilderness tents fitted with high camp beds made up with mattresses, sheets, duvets and pillows. The tents have en-suite long drop toilets and bucket showers. For families travelling with younger children on private trips, Letaka Safaris have designed a family tent, ensuring the children’s safety and their parent’s peace of mind. The family tent is a two bedroom unit with adjoining bathroom.
Showers can be ordered as hot, cold or warm and the water is heated in a bucket on the fire. Showers may be taken at any time but on Kalahari safaris the guide withholds the right to limit water use and showering depending upon the availability of water. Both hand towels and bath towels are supplied for the guests’ convenience but please note that guests should bring their own personal items and toiletries.
Each tent has an oil/paraffin lamp on the veranda and in the bathroom and within the tent itself a LED rechargeable camp light is supplied along with a side table in the sleeping area and in the bathroom. Although each tent has lighting and there are lamps strategically placed around the camp for navigation, an essential tool for your safari is a headlamp which lets you read a book at night in your tent or catch up with your safari journal as you listen to the sounds of the wild outside! If you don’t buy it from us make sure you buy it from someone and take our advice – don’t pack the free headlamp you got at the supermarket with your battery purchase. Spending a little bit of money will save you a lot of frustration. If you are travelling as a couple then pack one per person.
Our Vehicles
Letaka Safaris vehicles are spacious and comfortable taking a maximum of 9 guests as well as a fridge keeping those all important sundowner drinks cold. All our vehicles are fitted with inverters and strip plugs to allow guests to charge batteries whilst on safari.
