Bogota, Colombia’s capital, is located at an altitude of 2,600 meters in the central region of Cundinamarca with close to 8 million inhabitants. Its main attractions include the colonial district of Candelaria, Bolivar Square, as well as many museums, historical monuments, shopping centers and renowned national and international cuisine. A few hours from the capital, you can visit the Laguna de Guatavita, an ancient indigenous site belonging to the Muisca community. Or head to Chingaza National Park to enjoy the “paramo” (a regional, treeless ecosystem) and visit the Siecha lagoons, Chicaque Park or the Salt Catheral in Zipaquira.

Explore the world of Colombian cowboys. Admire the dramatic sunsets, glorious rivers like Caño Cristales, and the tasty beef of the country’s eastern plains. Colombia’s eastern plains present a world filled with promise and adventure. Visitors will watch the country’s cowboys gallop into the distance as they uncover the rare wildlife and staggering scenery this region has to offer. Its broad plains seem endless. In reality, the vast savannas of eastern Colombia stretch all the way to the jungle.

Day by Day Overview

Transfer from your hotel to Bogota airport, approximately 30 minutes, for your domestic flight to Yopal (baggage weight limit of 23 kilos, additional kilos can be paid at the airport). Depart from Yopal in a 4×4 to the reserve Hato La Aurora crossing the Casanare Department, in the heart of the Llano region. Arrive at the reserve and have time to settle into your room before a delicious typical Llanos lunch. Then you can take a stroll by yourself and look for the surrounding wildlife. In the evening, enjoy dinner and sunset on the plains before resting in the ecolodge. Located 180 km from Yopal, Juan Solito Ecolodge is a charming lodge built with local materials, in keeping with the architecture of the region. The various activities on offer will allow you to discover the incredible wildlife (howler monkeys, pumas, anaconda and lots of birds species) living in these tropical grasslands.

After breakfast, go on a jeep safari around the Hato La Aurora reserve. You’ll have the chance to see wildlife such as capybaras, white-tailed deer, alligators, cattle, wild horses, and a great number of birds such as herons, plovers, owls, ibis and a variety of countless surprises that inhabit these lands. For lunch, you can try meat with different types of sides (cheese, rice, plantain, cassava, salad) and many other delights. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. If the sun has already set, you can try to spot nocturnal wildlife and if it’s a clear night, you can see a multitude of stars. Dinner at the Ecolodgel and, if you are not too tired, listen to the llanera harp, poems, traditional folk songs and listen to the legend of the duck, la llorona and the fireball.

Today you can choose between two options: (1) Horseback riding in the reserve to discover many species of birds and howler monkeys living in these forests or (2) Boat trip in the reserve to take in the amazing beauty of the surrounding landscape. You can fish on the river and enjoy the sunset in the evening. Dinner and overnight at the Ecolodge.

Go in search of the anaconda, this mysterious animal hero of many legends. The fascinating animal often lives near rivers. You will learn a lot about this aquatic snake with its impressive jaw and ability to hide in the water breathing through its nostrils above the surface. Anacondas are a dangerous predator for jaguars, caimans and other anacondas but are not a threat to man. Dinner and overnight at the Ecolodge.

After breakfast, head back to Yopal. If you are not in a hurry, take one last walk around the lodge, have lunch, pack your bags and enjoy the landscapes and animals one last time.
