Camping
A 4-day guided camping safari in the stunning Moremi Game Reserve, exploring this amazing area by boat, on foot and, for a totally different perspective, by helicopter! This is a fully serviced safari staying in en-suite tents for three nights at Letaka Tented Camp on the Boro River in the Moremi Game Reserve. From Moremi you'll push right up to the fringes of the beautiful Okavango Delta. Activities include boat cruises, nature walks and a helicopter flight.
From USD 1,965 per person
After your arrival at Maun International Airport you will be met by Helicopter Horizons for your charter flight to Xaxaba Airstrip where you will be met by your guide for a boat transfer to our camp on the river.
If you are staying in Maun prior to the safari, please request an airport transfer, Helicopter Horizons will liaise with your accommodation the day before to confirm the flight departure time.
Spending our three nights camping along the banks of the Boro River in Moremi Game Reserve, we explore the surrounding wilderness and waterways by boat and by foot.
Wildlife: from the air only the larger animals are seen easily. These include large breeding herds of African elephant that spend the majority of their time in the mopane scrub with a daily commute to drink along the myriad channels and lagoons. On the open plains large herds of buffalo and lechwe can be seen and in the waterways rafts of hippopotami are a common sight. Once you land and transfer to your boat a variety of the smaller game can be found alongside the river. Your guide will spend time unlocking nature’s many secrets in looking at the smaller aspects of our wonderful natural habitat. Nature walks are a great opportunity to get down to ground level and explore the delta up close and personal.
Birding: a good day for raptors with African fish eagle, Gabar goshawk, shikra, little sparrowhawk and tawny eagle all inhabiting the riparian woodlands and adjacent floodplains. Other birds common along this route include most of Botswana’s hornbills including red-billed, southern yellow-billed, African grey, Bradfield’s and the Southern ground hornbills. A large number of other species are also present including water birds such as the African jacana, Lesser jacana, pygmy goose, little bittern and a variety of lapwing species.
Accommodation: Letaka Tented Camp
Activities: boat cruise, scenic flight
Habitat: Moremi Game Reserve encompasses much of the central and eastern portions of the Okavango Delta. Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast stands of Miscanthus and Phragmites, woodland and savannah. We will be exploring the south-western portion of this region along one of the Okavango’s main waterways which runs all the way south to the Thamalakane River in Maun which goes on to become the Boteti River which runs down into Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.
Wildlife: red lechwe and impala are commonly seen alongside the river and in the floodplains adjacent to the river. Large herds of buffalo move through the area and are often shadowed by lion. Elephant are often encountered either in or next to the river as are the ubiquitous hippopotamus. All of the large predators occur in this area although they are mostly found a little distance away from the river.
Birding: the swampy areas of Xakanaxa are home to African rail, coppery-tailed coucal, black coucal*, red-chested flufftail, African crake*, black crake, chirping cisticola, Luapula sisticola, purple swamphen, Allen’s gallinule to name but a few. The open waters attract African skimmer, saddle-billed stork, yellow-billed stork, intermediate egret, Goliath heron, African fish eagle as well as the globally threatened slaty egret and wattled crane.
Accommodation: Letaka Tented Camp
Activities: boat cruises and nature walks, night sky exploration
Following an early morning breakfast, we pack our bags into the boat and bid farewell to our camp crew as we begin our journey back to Maun. Depending on the location of our camp, this journey will take between three to five hours along the winding waterways of the Okavango with a stop on an island for tea and coffee. You may also opt to take a helicopter flight back to Maun (minimum 2 pax).
LUGGAGE NOTE: On arrival you will be given a soft bag which has been designed to fit the storage bins on the helicopter. These bags have an internal volume of approximately 20 litres which is more than ample for all your clothing and toiletries for the 3 night safari. In addition to this you may also bring a soft camera bag and there is no restriction on weight. If you have additional luggage which you do not require for the 3 night river safari, Helicopter Horizons will put this into safe storage for you and return it to you when you get back to Maun at the end of your safari.
