In the morning, transfer from your hotel in Bogota to Chingaza National Park, located about 3,400 meters above sea level. Upon arrival, you will start a little hike in one of the most beautiful ‘paramos’ in the world. A car and driver will be available to drive you to the different areas where the spectacled bear was last spotted. An omnivore, yet mainly herbivorous animal, the spectacled bear is most likely to be seen at nightfall. Therefore, you will spend the next three nights in the park, to give you a better chance of seeing it.

Have breakfast and depart on a hike in the National Park. You will look for the spectacled bear as well as other endemic species. You will spend the whole day in the paramo, a specific ecosystem characterized by a humid climate at high altitude. You will discover the endemic flora, including the paramo’s most representative plant: the frailejon. Lunch in the park and then in the afternoon, continue to observe the local wildlife. With a bit of luck, you may be able to see a green-bearded helmetcrest, an endemic hummingbird, the swamp brocket, a small deer native to the Andes, or even an Andean Condor. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Today will also be dedicated to spotting the spectacled bear in its natural habitat. The spectacled bear’s biggest threat used to be the farmers chasing it away because it ate their crops and livestock, causing it to become shy around humans. However, efforts have been made to conserve this endemic species by raising awareness among the local farmers about the importance of the spectacled bear in the paramo ecosystem. The bear is now completely protected within the National Park and as a result is slowly starting to stop seeing human beings as a threat.
