Situated in the east of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve ranks as one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa. It covers more than 4,871 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, the varied terrain includes savannah, winding waterways and dense forest. This diverse ecosystem supports an incredibly wide spectrum of wildlife, ranging from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, to the rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope, lion, cheetah and packs of wild dog in the open grasslands. The birdlife is prolific and includes most of the 550 bird species recorded on Botswana’s national bird list. A range of luxury lodges in the reserve offers visitors the perfect base to experience this corner of paradise.
Overnight: Oddballs’ Camp View, Full Board basis & Activities, 2 nights
Oddballs’ is situated on the edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta. The camp is accessible by light aircraft only and is a 20-minute flight from Maun. On arrival you will be met at the airstrip and welcomed to the island by your professional guide. Accommodation is in simple, comfortable canvas 3m x 3m rooms set on elevated wooden decks, each with a view of the surrounding bush. Each tent has its own rustic en-suite facilities including hot and cold running water for the al fresco bucket shower. Each tent is equipped with bedding, a storage trunk and a light. The central bar and lounge area has comfortable chairs and sofas, a selection of books and games, and raised viewing decks overlooking the sweep of the delta – the perfect place to sip a sundowner and watch the sun set over the palm trees, and view whatever wildlife may be visiting. Oddballs’ offers no motorized activities. Each guide has his own mokoro (pl. mekoro), (the genuine wooden article, not the plastic replica), in which he’ll take you gliding through the Okavango to nearby islands, where he’ll walk you through magnificent scenery to view game, birds, insects, medicinal plants, tracks, signs, droppings, and other fascinating natural phenomena.
Go on you last shared game activity from Oddballs Camp (time dependant), before your transfer back to airstrip for your flight to Khwai. In Khwai you will be met and transferred to Khwai Guesthouse, freshen up and go on your first shared game activities in the Khwai concession.
The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.
Overnight: Khwai Guest House, Full Board and Activities, 2 nights
Tucked in the heart of the friendly rural village of Khwai, at the doorstep of the Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Guest House opens the door to a true African experience, offering a pristine immersion into Botswana’s unique nature and culture. Welcoming guests in 6 en-suite bungalows, Khwai Guest House offers a cozy nest from which to experience the traditional lifestyle of this small community set among one of the most spectacular wilderness locations of Botswana. Guests have the choice between being completely independent, making use of the communal cooking area and exploring this stunning destination on their own, or enjoying the homely restaurant and joining some of the many activities on offer: game drives for half a day or a full day in Moremi Game Reserve or in the Khwai concession, traditional dugout canoe (mokoro) excursions on a channel bordering the game reserve, night drives, cultural tour and encounter of the Khwai community.
Morning guided game activity, such as game drive, boat cruise, mokoro, game/nature walk or village walk. From now until afternoon tea, your time is yours to do as you please. Relax around camp, enjoy the views, or keep an eye out for animals coming into camp, as they regularly do. After tea, you go on another activity and set out in the cooler hours of the afternoon, as the sun drops and the colours become less harsh. You pause at sunset for sundowners of your choice, and some choice nibbles, before starting your night drive to see the different nocturnal creatures. If you are lucky, this is also a great time to spot predation.
Enjoy a last game activity from in the Khwai concession and breakfast, before you make your way back to the aistrip and fly to Kasane for your Chobe experience. In Kasane you will be met and taken to Chobe Safari Lodge, where you will stay for the next 2 nights. During your stay enjoy morning and afternoon shared game activities; game drives, boat cruises and village visits are included.
NOTE: We recommend and upgrade to the more private Chobe Elephant Camp, located towards Ngoma Gate, which is less busy.
The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, renowned for its diverse and abundant game viewing opportunities. This section of the park is best known for its dense concentration of wildlife including elephant and hippo populations, but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them. A visit to this area guarantees close encounters with an array of African wildlife. Visitors can look forward to some exciting activities such as being driven along the game-dotted river banks in a 4WD, cruising along the river in a motorboat, spotting rare birdlife for a unique safari experience.
