Being one of the newer routes on the Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route is still less visited and gives you the chance to experience its pure nature and the stunning panorama views, without sharing it with a mass of other trekkers. Due to the increasing traffic on other routes like Marangu or Machame, Tanzania’s tourism industry wisely decided to open another one: the Lemosho Route. This new trails advantages are its ravishing panoramas, you will find less trekkers here and the high success rate guarantees you a that you will make it to the top of the roof of Africa, the Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The trekking starts in a beautiful rainforest and lead us higher and higher over the Shira Plateau, past volcanic rock formations and glaciers. We hike through the impressive Barranco Valley with towering cliffs next to us. Thanks to our 8 days trek we ascend fast up the mountain, while still having enough time to enjoy all the highlights Mount Kilimanjaro has to offer. The most popular one is waiting for us on the very top of this grand mountain: A sunrise view over Tanzania from the Uhuru Peak! Forget everything that might bother you and just enjoy the moment. Believe us, with this stunning view right in front of you, this will be no problem. So don’t wait anymore and take your chance to relax on the Roof of Africa!
From USD 2,100 per person
You will be picked up at your hotel at 8 am in the morning and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After the registration process you will still ascending steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades until you get to Big Tree Camp where you will be spending the night.
Today you will trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. Our destination for today is the Shira 1 Camp from where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude today and parts of the route will be quite steep.
Today you will get the chance to view the northern ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views. Our destination today is the Shira 2 Camp. In the afternoon you will take an acclimatization walk then head back to camp for dinner and overnight.
Your trek for the day begins with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, hiking into the alpine desert climate zone and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640m), our highest point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960m), sheltered by towering cliffs and with beautiful views of the plains below.
Our day starts by descending to what is the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. This climb is not too technical but can still be long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga valley to our night’s camp at Karanga camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp for our well deserved night rest.
After a good night’s rest and some decent breakfast, we set off on our trek to Barafu Camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep hike made more difficult by the altitude. Upon arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to stay hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the push to the summit.
We start off at around midnight and hike steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours and gain incredible altitude over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first sun rays hit us. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour of trekking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then start descending on a scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest. What a day.
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a hot welcome shower. Well done!

First of all, let us thank the Nakuja Africa Adventures team - specially Jackson - for suggesting the Lemosho route instead of Machame! It definitely allowed a better acclimatization and made summit possible! Jackson answered all our questions and guides us very well trough the the reservation process. Our trip was amazing! Everything was well organized and we were welcomed at the Mbugani hotel by Jackson, who checked carefully our gear and made sure that we had everything we needed for the climbing. Be assured: if she says you need warmer clothes for summit night, trust him! Finally, let us thank you very much for appointing Innocent and his crew to guide and help us trough our adventure. They were amazing and cared for us like family. All the porters were amazing, food was always delicious and hot! We couldn’t be more happy about the experience we had with them
