Arusha National Park has prolific forest bird life including Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon while Mkomazi National Park has over 400 bird species such as the striking martial eagle and violet wood-hoopoe. In the Usambara Mountains over 500 species have been recorded including the endemic Usambara weaver, Usambara akalat and the Usambara eagle owl. There is also fantastic wildlife to see along the way on game drives and walking safaris.

Day by Day Overview
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will arrange a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Masailand Safari Lodge in Arusha, where the rest of the day is at leisure. Masailand Safari Lodge is beautifully located on the foot of Mount Meru and is a perfect place to prepare for your adventure. We will gather in the hotel for a pre-safari briefing and an equipment check.
Dinner and overnight at Masailand Safari Lodge: Dinner and Breakfast included
In the morning, we will collect you from your hotel in Arusha and take you to Arusha National Park, just 30 minutes from Arusha city, for a full day walking safari. The park has an incredible variety of fauna and flora which cannot fail to impress. Hollywood also chose this region to film the movie “Hatari” in which Hardy Kruger starred alongside the legendary John Wayne. Your day trip will include a visit to the Ngurdo Crater. Look out for buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, warthog, zebra, and baboon, which can be seen all year round, as well as many different bird species. Birdlife is prolific with many forest species easily seen here such as Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon.
At the Momella Gate, an armed ranger will be waiting for you to accompany you on the walking safari that will give you the chance to experience the wildlife up close. Only a few other national parks in Tanzania give you such an opportunity and it is something that should not be missed. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Momella Lake, famous for huge flocks of colorful flamingos, other waders and stunning views of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon, continue your tour in the safari vehicle through Arusha National Park. After plenty of time allocated for you to observe the wildlife and birdlife, we will drive to Same for an overnight stay.

Morning pick-up from your hotel and depart to Mkomazi National Park, located in northeastern Tanzania on the Kenyan border. It is much less visited than other national parks, giving Mkomazi a unique charm. Arrive in time for a full day game viewing in the park, which is home to elephant, black rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, oryx, kudu, eland, hartebeest, zebra, wild dog and more. Dinner and overnight at Elephants Motel: Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch included
After breakfast you’ll go for a full day of game viewing taking a packed lunch to maximize your time. The park is a refuge for the endangered black rhino and wild dog and is outstanding for East Africa bird watching – there are over 400 recorded species including doves, hornbills, weavers and guinea-fowl which are present in large numbers, as well as striking species such as the martial eagle and violet wood-hoopoe. After an exciting day of wildlife viewing, you’ll drive back to your hotel in the evening.

An early start is essential and you’ll be picked up from your hotel with a packed lunch. Drive to Mkomazi National Park, which is approximately 10 km from Same town, about 20 minutes drive. After registration you will enter the park and start your game drive and walking safari with an armed park ranger. Late in the afternoon, we drive to Lushoto for an overnight stay.

After breakfast walk to Vuga Peak, where Mombo and Korogwe towns can be seen, which takes about 4-5 hours. In the Montane Forest, there’s a high chance of seeing the most colourful forest bird species, reptiles (like chameleons), butterflies, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys and forest flowers. Lunch will be provided on the way and you visit a village close to Vuga Peak. On arrival at the lodge, you can take a short walk for bird watching or to the waterfalls.

After breakfast, walk and explore the Usambara Mountains in the northeast of Tanzania. Landscape, tropical forests, spectacular viewpoints, historical sites and the opportunity to visit local community development projects, provide a memorable experience. Over 500 bird species have been recorded including the endemic Usambara weaver, Usambara akalat and the Usambara eagle owl. A picnic lunch is provided on the way. You can arrange a village tour where you can learn about the traditional way of life of the indigenous communities.

After morning breakfast we will take our overland safari back to Arusha.
