Mid Range
This Uganda special tour combines gorillas and golden monkeys and much more in these two thick forest national parks. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is well known for gorillas but it’s not the only gorilla home Uganda has. Mt. Mgahinga boasts gorillas as well as other rare species of monkeys. The endangered golden monkey is endemic to the Albertine Rift, and Lakato Safaris provides you with a chance to track these unique creatures. Until a few years ago, this pretty monkey was common in Rwanda’s Gishwati Forest Reserve, most of which was chopped down by returned refugees in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide and unconfirmed sources indicate that a small population might occur further south in the same country’s Nyungwe Forest National Park. Fortunately, the golden monkey is the numerically dominant primate within this restricted range and a 2003 survey estimated a population of 3,000 – 4,000 in Mgahinga National Park.

Your arrival will be a warm welcome by our company representative. You will check in at your hotel then acclimatize. Briefing about your safari is also done today and final payments if any. Depending on time of arrival, you will be taken for a city tour for an introduction of Uganda and the people.
Early start after your breakfast to embark on the approximately 9-hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest Park. Along the way you will stop at the equator to take photographs, purchase some crafts and stretch your legs before continuing your journey to stop again for lunch. After lunch you will proceed with your journey as you drive through beautiful scenery, rolling hills with terraces as you arrive in Kabale also called the ‘Switzerland of Africa’. Late afternoon arrive in Bwindi.
Enjoy your breakfast and set out from your lodge with a packed lunch as you head to the park headquarters at 7 am for a briefing before you embark on gorilla tracking in the thick misty Bwindi Forest. Thereafter proceed for tracking, which can be unpredictable and is mainly dependent on how far the gorillas go. Once the family group is found, trekkers are allowed to spend one hour with the gentle giants, watching them playing and feeding. Later return back to the lodge and enjoy the lodge facilities, relax until dinner then overnight.
Today after your breakfast your driver guide will transfer you to Kisoro, Uganda, at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes. Enjoy the winding roads of the ‘thousand hills’ and magnificent views of the Volcanoes. You will spend the afternoon at leisure in preparation for trekking and hiking the following day.
Golden monkeys are only found in the Virunga Volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. Today you will leave your lodge after an early breakfast and your driver guide will transfer you to the briefing point where the golden monkey trekking starts. A Uganda wildlife authority ranger guide will receive you and offer you a briefing with information on what to expect while in the park as you search for the golden monkeys. After this short brief, you will then start your hike up in search of the golden monkeys.
You are encouraged to take with you a porter because the hike can be steep in some areas and they will be helpful. You will be joined by enforcement officers to help in case you meet the wild buffaloes and elephants which can be dangerous. The golden monkeys are generally more active than the gorillas, they neither nest or make lots of noise and are small compared to gorillas, which can make tracking them difficult plus the weather conditions but with the help of park rangers you should spot them. You will follow them as they move all over the place and feed. Just like gorilla trekking, you are only allowed to spend one hour with the golden monkeys before you start your descent back to the starting point and your lodge.
After a morning breakfast, we will drive back to Kampala with packed lunches passing through the winding roads and beautiful scenery Uganda unveils, with a stop over at an interesting place to enjoy your lunch. Arrive in Kampala in the early evening where your safari guide will transfer you to your hotel for overnight.
This marks the end of your safari and the airport transfer of today will be given to you by our friendly drivers at the time of your flight. If the airport transfer is late, then we shall also offer you a chance for a city tour to shop for souvenir around Kampala and also take you to Kampala’s famous and historical sites then drop you off to the airport in time for your flight and see you off.
