This site provides an excellent introduction to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Continue to delve into the traditional markets of downtown Amman, known as souks, where you would see the daily life of the local people. Ask your guide to teach you how to haggle if you can’t resist some colourful spices or traditional carpet. The downtown area also provides a great opportunity to stop at a local restaurant or café to enjoy some traditional Jordanian cuisine and drinks, allowing you to sample the local flavours and hospitality. Afterwards, head to a more modern landmark, the King Abdullah I Mosque, with its big blue dome. Travellers can access all parts, also during prayer times, but must be dressed conservatively.
Then you head north to the magnificent Roman ruins of Jerash. Visit the Greco-Roman City of Jerash also known as the City of the thousand columns. Jerash showcases the grandeur of Imperial Rome (and is sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the East). It is considered one of the largest, and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy.
As the most pristine Decapolis City (meaning ten cities in Greek) in the modern world, Jerash’s prosperity can be admired in the colonnaded main street and lovely Oval Piazza. After that, you will visit Ajloun, the city of Nature, to see Ajloun Castle which is above the green hills of Ajloun.
Today you will continue the journey south to Mount Nebo. According to the Old Testament, this is the peak where Moses took in the view of the Promised Land. Look out at the Dead Sea and beyond, before making your way to the Memorial Church of Moses. From here, you’ll depart for the market town of Madaba to discover its intricate Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, including the large Madaba Map, the oldest preserved mosaic map of the Holy Land.
Continue south to the Crusader castle in Karak, where you will have the opportunity to navigate the maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. The next stop is Shoubak castle, also known as Montreal, which provides a contrasting example to Karak. Spend a little time exploring the towers and walls decorated with carved inscriptions dating back to the 14th century.
