After breakfast our guide will pick you from the hotel for a visit to Gisozi Genocide Memorial to learn about the genocide which took place in Rwanda 1994. Afterwards set off to Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda. You will arrive at park headquarters and register before taking a very interesting behind the scenes tour. Here key park management will go through the history of Akagera National Park (Africa’s second oldest national park), their anti-poaching methods and confiscated items, conservation measures and a look at their innovative tracking room which monitors the movements of the parks newest inhabitants, the lions and rhinos. We will then drive to your accommodation, check in, enjoy relaxing time and perhaps go to the swimming pool.

The name Akagera is derived from the majestic Akagera River, one of the sources of Nile River, the longest river in the world. Akagera Park shelters a range of lakes including Lake Ihema, Lake Rwanyakizinga, Lake Shakani, Lake Mihindi and Lake Gishanju which together combine to form the largest wetland system in the whole of Central Africa.

Driving Distance: 2 hr 30 mins
Activity: Behind The Scenes Tour
Overnight: Akagera Game Lodge

Early breakfast as today is a full day’s game drive as we make our way from the southern part of Akagera all the way to the northern sector.  The northern sector has wide savannah and is where we are most likely to spot lions and rhinos. The lions where introduced 4 years ago and their numbers are increasing very healthily while the rhinos have had less than a year in the park so it will be a great day if we manage to spot them.  This is big savannah country with several lakes dotting the landscape creating further opportunities to spot bird life and hippos. Later in the afternoon we exit via the northern gate of Akagera and return to Kigali via a 2 hour drive.

Activity: Long Game Drives
Overnight: Pure Africa Coffee
Meal Plan: Bed & Breakfast

After breakfast our guide will pick you from the hotel for the drive to Musanze, home of the mountain gorillas and volcanoes. On arrival in Musanze check-in at the hotel and have lunch. Later in the afternoon join the local women in the village for a culture experience. You will join them in making the famous banana beer making experience where you participate in making and testing the local beer, you will also learn how to weave the peace basket (agaseke) and enjoy Rwandan traditional dance. After the experience drive back to the hotel.

It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The afternoon is spent in this large port on the Rwandan shore of Lake Kivu – you will be in the company of our guide to show you around. Enjoy a boat ride to one of the islands in Lake Kivu. Simply explore the town, enjoying the hustle and bustle of the local market or wander through the leafy streets admiring the old colonial buildings. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Eucalyptus trees line the road, while every corner of the hills is terraced with bananas. Villagers smile and wave; you’ll end up with hands tired from waving and feel like royalty at the end of the trip! Arrive for lunch at Moriah Hills Resort  then take a boat trip to the island of Amahoro Napoleon’s island – with its colony of fruit bats (aptly known as one bar island as all it has on it is one bar). Deeply incised creeks, towering mountain ranges and islands offer a magnificent panorama. Later stay dinner and overnight at Moriah Hills Resort.
