The Great Wildebeest Migration in the plains of East Africa is one of the world’s most spectacular displays of wildlife behavior as thousands of wildebeest and zebras migrate to greener pastures, stalked by predators. Already known for its abundance of animals, the thundering arrival of the annual wildebeest migration adds to the Masai Mara National Reserve's rich wildlife.
The great wildebeest migration is one of the most thrilling natural spectacles on earth as thousands of wildebeest and zebras migrate to greener pastures as the seasons change. Every July (or sometimes August), the wildebeest traverse the plains of the Serengeti and Masai covering over 600 miles (960 km) from Tanzania’s Serengeti plains, northwards to the Masai Mara where the Mara River is the final obstacle. In October or November, once they have feasted and the grass has all but gone, they turn around and go back the other way.
Predators such as lions, cheetahs, vultures, hyenas and many more follow the migration closely, waiting for an opportunity to strike weak prey as they make their way into different territories. The giant African crocodiles lie in wait patiently as the big herds come to cross the river or to drink.
The great wildebeest migration attracts nature enthusiasts, filmmakers and photographers who come from around the world to witness one of Africa’s most dazzling cycles of life. Many have come back time and again to witness this mass movement of wild animals roaming free through unspoiled and savage wilderness.
