The Machame Route
Also known as the ‘whiskey route’, the Machame Route is the most popular on Mount Kilimanjaro with its scenic beauty. However, the trail is also considered difficult, steep and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary, and is therefore better suited for the more adventurous or those with some high altitude, hiking or backpacking experience. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, beginning with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The path leads hikers through the rain forest to Shira Plateau, where many of Kilimanjaro’s routes converge. Then the route turns east and traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. The descent is made via the Mweka route.

Day by Day Overview
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate (1,800m), complete the necessary park formalities and meet your porters and guides. Begin the climb through the lush rainforest, enjoying the scenic surroundings Reach Kilimanjaro Machame Camp, set up camp, and rest for the night.
Overnight Kilimanjaro Machame Camp
On the second day, wake up early and have a hearty breakfast. Trek through the picturesque moorland zone, experiencing the changing landscape. Pass through the Shira Plateau, an expansive high-altitude desert with stunning views Arrive at Kilimanjaro Shira Camp, set up camp, and rest for the night.
Overnight Kilimanjaro Shira Camp
You will start the day with a gradual ascent towards the Lava Tower (4,630m). Take a break at the Lava Tower to acclimatize and enjoy the panoramic views. Descend to the Barranco Camp, known as the “Breakfast Wall” for its steep ascent.
Overnight stay at Kilimanjaro Barranco Camp
You will begin the day by conquering the Kilimanjaro Barranco Wall, a thrilling and challenging climb Continue the trek through the alpine desert, with striking views of the glaciers. Arrive at Kilimanjaro Karanga Camp, nestled in a scenic valley. Set up camp, rest, and prepare for the next day’s ascent.
Overnight Kilimanjaro Baranco Camp
After breakfast, embark on a relatively short trek to Barafu Camp. Ascend through the barren landscape and reach the base camp Barafu Camp which serves as the launching point for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the final push. Early dinner and overnight stay at Kilimanjaro Barafu Camp.
Overnight at Kilimanjaro Barafu Camp
Start the day in the middle of the night for the summit attempt. Trek to Stella Point (5,739m), the rim of the crater, to witness a spectacular sunrise. Push towards the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate your achievement, take memorable photos, and begin the descent. Descend to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend the night.
