Mid Range
Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, most well established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping accommodation in simple alpine huts with all the essential requirements such as mattresses and pillows (bring your own sleeping bag). There are communal dining halls, washrooms and toilets. This route is usually done in 5 days (shortest route to the summit) but can be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.
If you have opted for the optional airport transfers, our company representative will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport upon landing and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
Depending on your schedule, you will meet your African Delight Safaris mountain guide for your climb on the same day or early the next morning. The guide will provide a pre-trek briefing at your Moshi hotel and will also review your equipment and assist you in renting any missing equipment which is needed.
Distance: 8km/5 miles Walking Time: 3-4 hours Zone: Rainforest Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Alpine Huts
After breakfast and another briefing from your guide (including equipment check-up) and a formal introduction to your hiking team of porters & cooks, we will have a 1hr drive through Marangu Village to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate (1860m/6100ft).
After submission of the necessary paper work and registration with the National Park authorities your trek can begin. Day one is a gradual trek through the Kilimanjaro rainforest, at these lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy so trekking poles will help. Aside from the impressive vegetation of Eucalyptus trees, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and various bird species can be observed. After about 3-4 hours, you will reach at your destination – the Mandara Hut (2700m/8875ft).
Distance: 12 km/7.5 miles Walking Time: 6-8 hours Zone: Heathland Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Alpine Huts
Day two on the Marangu Route begins with an early breakfast for an early start. The hike follows an ascending path into the heathland where giant heathers grow, and as you climb higher, into the moorland. The altitude begins to change and giant lobelias which are scattered throughout the landscape can be seen and you will have your first majestic view of Mawenzi and Kibo summit.
After a 5-6 hour hike, you will reach the Horombo Hut, which at 3720 meters above sea level. Here you will be served dinner by our team and shown to your sleeping quarters for the night.
Distance: 4.6km / 3.1 miles Walking Time: 3 hours Zone: Heathland Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Alpine Huts
Day 3 serves as an acclimatization day and so no need to pack your bags you’ll stay a second night at Horombo; this will greatly improve your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, an optional 3 hour trek follows to the Zebra Rocks (4020m) where distinctive black and white stripes all over the surface gave the rock formation its name. Glorious views of Kibo summit can also be enjoyed at the base of Mawenzi peak. Once you return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you and the rest of the day will be spent at the camp where you can rest.
Distance: 10km / 6 miles Walking Time: 5-7 hours Zone: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Kibo Huts
Day 4 is long and tough with rugged and rocky landscape while observing beautiful lobelias. There are two routes to Kibo. The upper route, forks to the right. We will take the lower left route as it is easier and nearly an hour shorter. On the left hand route you will pass the last water point at 4,130m which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. At Kibo camp, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early nap as the night will be short.
Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down Walking Time: 6-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent Zone: Arctic Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Accommodation: Alpine Huts
Today is the great day – Summit Day! Your final ascent will start at around midnight because the lava ash is still frozen and so the hike is easier. The long and strenuous way to the summit begins. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly ascends. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) located at the crater rim of Kilimanjaro. After a further hike of 1-2 hours passing Stella Point (5,756m/18,885ft) you will reach the Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters.
Congratulations! You‘ve made it to the “Roof of Africa”. Enjoy and cherish this moment.
From here we descend, retracing our steps back to Kibo for breakfast, a warm meal and much needed rest. After a 1-2 hour rest, you will descend to Horombo Hut (3720m) which will feel oxygen rich after the summit. We will arrive in the afternoon for an overnight stay.
Distance: 20km /12 miles Walking Time: 5-7 hours Zone: Low Alpine zone & Forest Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Accommodation: 4 Star Hotel
Day 6 is our last day on the mountain & will begin with a heavy breakfast and a chat with your hiking crew after a successful trek. A steady descent takes us down through the moorland to the Mandara Hut where a warm lunch will be served. We will then continue through the tropical rainforest where trekking poles will greatly help as the terrain is muddy. After 6 hours of trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park, Marangu Gate (1879m)
A private vehicle will be waiting for you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour). Your guide will have already arranged for your official government certificate and will be delivered to you. You will be exhausted at this stage and a very hot and long shower is recommended!
