Day by Day Overview
On the first day you will drive to the authentic Chagga village of Materuni, about 15 km from Moshi town with lush landscapes, thundering waterfalls and walks along banana and coffee fields. Materuni is the last village before the start of Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park around 1600 m above sea level. You will hike to the waterfalls following a path in coffee and banana fields for approximately 45 minutes while encountering locals along the way and in their fields working the land. Enjoy the scenery and breathtaking views along the way. After admiring the waterfalls you will return to the village for a delicious local lunch before the coffee experience. Here you will learn how coffee is being cultivated and dried, roasted and further processed. You will also be invited to participate in the preparation and savour a cup of coffee you helped to prepare. Later in the day you will drive to Arusha city for overnight.
Today you will drive to Tarangire National Park from Arusha for a game drive. Tarangire National Park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is mainly made up of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation consists of Acacia woodland and giant African baobab trees, with huge swamp areas in the south. Both the river and the swamps act like a magnet for wild animals during Tanzania’s dry season. Tarangire National Park is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. Around midday you will stop for a picnic lunch and then proceed with game drive until early evening when you will check out of the park and drive to Karatu town for dinner and overnight.
Today starts early at 6 am with a packed breakfast and lunch. Drive around 20 minutes to Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance gate. Descend 600 m to the crater floor for a game drive – you will be amazed by the beauty of this World Heritage Site. An early morning game drive in the crater provides excellent wildlife sighting and photographic opportunities before the sun rises high. The crater is 264 sq km in size and is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Due to its natural borders the crater has an abundance of wildlife including endangered African black rhino, zebras, wildebeest, hyena, hippos, buffalo, elephant and cats including lions, jackals and cheetah. Early afternoon you will have a picnic lunch with view of hippos on their pool and later continue with the game drive. Ascend from the crater and then drive into the heart of wild Africa to the legendary Serengeti National Park with its endless plains as far as your eye can see. Continue with a game drive and make the most of the golden hours and sunset before we check in to our accommodation in central Serengeti.
On the fourth day, wake up in the wild in Serengeti National Park with one of the best sunrises you will ever see. After breakfast you will start a full day game drive around central Serengeti, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring Seronera River which provides a valuable water source to this area and attracts lots of resident wildlife. Central Serengeti is famous for having a large number of cats including lions, cheetah and leopard as well as big herds of wildebeest, zebras and groups of giraffe.
This morning after breakfast, you will begin a game drive towards Naabi Hills where you will stop for picnic lunch before you exit Serengeti National Park and drive through Ngorongoro highlands with a visit to a Maasai village for a cultural tour before continuing to Lake Eyasi. Arriving in the early evening and check in to your lodge. Around sundown take a stroll with a local guide and explore Lake Eyasi with a beautiful golden sunset on the horizon, watching the fishermen return to dock with their day’s catch and the women cleaning and trading the fresh fish catch. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
On the last day you will visit the Hadza tribe for a cultural tour. The Hadza have resided on the dry terrain near Lake Eyasi, south of Ngorongoro Crater for over 10,000 years while maintaining their hunter-gatherer ways of life. They are an extremely unique tribe which face extinction as their homeland is being converted into conservation areas and agricultural fields. The tribe has approximately 1300 members only with about 300–400 members still living the hunter – gatherer life. They are nomad hunters – gatherers who speak a click language similar to the Bushmen of Southern Africa. Later you will also visit the pastoralist Datoga tribe who also reside around Lake Eyasi. They are skillfully iron-smiths who make iron tools such as arrows, knifes, hoe and trade these with the other tribes including the Hadza. Later in the early afternoon you will drive to African Art Gallery for lunch before a drive to Arusha where you will be dropped to airport or hotel.
