Day by Day Overview

Leave Moshi or Arusha in the morning, headed for Marangu Gate to begin your Kilimanjaro trek. Walk along a narrow trail through the rain forest as you watch the various birds and monkeys in the trees. Stop for some lunch at the halfway point before continuing through the forest until reaching Mandara Hut. Relax for the rest of the day or take a short walk to Maundi Crater for views overlooking the Taveta and of Mawenzi Peak.

Elevation: 1,800m – 2,743m

After breakfast you will leave Mandara Hut and Kilimanjaro’s forest, heading for Horombo Hut. Most of the hike will be through the moorland, a rocky landscape with desert-like plants. Eat a picnic lunch at Kambi ya Taabu before continuing to Horombo Hut. If the weather is clear, enjoy beautiful views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Elevation: 2,743m – 3,720m

Day three is an acclimatization day. We suggest hiking all the way to Mawenzi Hut to allow for maximum acclimatization. The hike will increase your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak and reward you with magnificent views of Kibo. Return to Horombo for a late lunch before spending the afternoon and evening relaxing.

Elevation: 3,720m – 4,600m – 3,720m

Leave Horombo Hut after breakfast and hike through the moorland and alpine desert areas of Kilimanjaro. After hiking for about an hour you will arrive at Maua River, a small mountain stream before reaching flatter terrain where you will see the vegetation begin to disappear. Break for lunch at Middle Red Hill before your steady climb through Kilimanjaro’s saddle. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks before reaching Kibo Hut where you will relax and prepare for your push to the summit.

Elevation: 3,720m – 4,750m

Wake up around midnight for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The hike begins with a demanding climb to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim before a more gradual push to Uhuru Peak. Feel the immense feelings of accomplishment as you reach the summit, take some beautiful photos and take in the amazing views from the ‘roof of Africa’. Afterwards begin your descent, stopping for a short break at Kibo Hut before continuing on to Horombo Hut. Reach the camp in the afternoon and enjoy your last night on the mountain.

Elevation: 4,750m – 5,895m – 3,720m

After breakfast, finish the trek with your final descent to Marangu Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. Our vehicles will be waiting at the gate to take you back to Arusha or Moshi.

Elevation: 3,720m – 1,800m
