Day by Day Overview

In the morning you will make your way to Machame Gate for registration. Begin your hike by passing through the rain forest while keeping your eyes open for the many birds and the colobus monkeys that live there. Stop for some lunch and a break before pushing through to Machame Camp, arriving in the late afternoon. The porters would have arrived before you to set up your camp.

Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: 18 km’s | Elevation change: + 1,490 m

After breakfast you will spend the day reaching Shira Camp. The trail takes us to the top of the forest and then through the moorland zone. After a picnic lunch and a short rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau. Reach the campsite in the afternoon and prepare for a cold night as temperatures can drop below freezing.

Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: 9 km’s | Elevation change: + 860 m

The route begins to head east over the rocky landscape surrounding the Lava Tower. After reaching the tower, have some lunch before descending again to the Barranco camping area to acclimatize. Today will be the first time for some climbers to experience some breathlessness and headaches. As you catch your breathe, take some beautiful photographs of the Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and the Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for dinner.

Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: 15 km’s | Elevation change: + 790 m, – 680 m

After breakfast, leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, heading towards the Karanga Valley campsite. Join the Mweka Trail and continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you would have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many angles. Here you will rest and prepare for the summit.

Hiking time: 8-10 hours | Distance: 9 km’s | Elevation change: + 610 m

Wake up at midnight and continue on your journey to the summit, heading in a north-westerly direction and ascend through the heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. Stop for a short rest to watch the magnificent sunrise before your final push to the summit. Arrive at Uhuru Peak and experience the joy in your heart for having made it to the top. Make your way down to Mweka Hut, situated in the upper forest. In the evening you can enjoy your last dinner on the moutnain.

After an early breakfast, begin your short, scenic hike back to the park gate where you will sign your name in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Continue your hike down into the Mweka Village before being taken to your hotel in Moshi.

Hiking time: 4 hours | Distance: 15 km’s | Elevation change: – 1,120 m
