The first day of your safari – you leave Arusha town, the base town for safaris in the northern Tanzania, and travel along the Arusha – Dodoma highway – a scenic drive towards the Tarangire National Park. You will pass by a supermarket (if you wish) for some last-minute shopping of any personal effects that you may need. Then drive through a scenic Masai Steppe and arrive at Tarangire in 2 hours time. Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants and large baobab trees that dot the grassland in north Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round in – the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals. The Tarangire River has water all year round including during the dry season, between July and October. Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon and sunset when you will be taken to your camp.
We depart early after breakfast and head across the Great Rift Valley’s floor, up the escarpment and traverse the Ngorongoro Conservation area in what will ultimately end up being a pleasant and enjoyable scenic drive as you enjoy the beautiful scenery and breathtaking vistas on your way to the Serengeti National Park. Arrive in the Serengeti in the afternoon for a game drive until the evening when you will check in at a camp for dinner and overnight.
On the third day of your safari, experience morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti. The Serengeti means “endless plains” in Masai language. Renowned as a wildlife sanctuary, the Serengeti is home to over 3 million large mammals and approximately 35 species of plains animals, including the famous “big 5” – elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. Other common species include hippos, giraffes, impalas, antelopes, baboons, and monkeys. Moreover, you can observe a rich diversity of over 500 bird species such as eagles, ducks, geese, vultures and herons.
The park witnesses the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra between the Serengeti and the Kenyan Masai Mara. Witness the awe-inspiring migration of wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra in May or early June, followed by predators like lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs, while vultures circle overhead.
After lunch, continue your game viewing in Serengeti, heading to the park’s gate to check out. Then proceed with a game drive en route to Ngorongoro. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at a camp at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, renowned as “Africa’s Garden of Eden.”
After breakfast descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a thrilling 7-hour game drive with a lunch box. This ancient caldera, once a massive volcano, now teems with wildlife and offers a chance to spot the Big Five. The crater’s 600 m (1,968 ft) high walls provide natural protection and support a diverse range of species, including the critically endangered black rhino. With a year-round water supply, the crater hosts around 30,000 animals, including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephants, and more. Predators like lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and elusive leopards roam the crater floor. After a picnic lunch, continue the game drive before heading to Manyara or Karatu for the overnight stay.
On the final day we head to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of rewarding game drives. Despite being smaller, this park offers a diverse safari experience. It’s an unspoiled paradise with a ground water forest fed by springs, hosting elephants, hippos, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and large baboon troupes. The lake’s shore is brimming with birdlife and lucky visitors may spot tree-climbing lions lounging in the trees. Other impressive mammals and striking cliffs on the Rift escarpment complete the picturesque landscape. After the game drive, we return to Arusha.
