Day by Day Overview

Pick up in Nairobi (hotel or airport) early in the morning and head to Maasai Mara National Reserve via Mai Mahiu-Narok road. The journey will take at least 5 hours with a few stopovers on the way including the Rift Valley view point. On arrival, check in to Mara Sopa Hotel for lunch followed by an evening game drive. Stay here for three nights.

The Maasai Mara is a large national reserve in Narok, Kenya, continuous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin. It is one of the most famous and important wildlife conservation and wilderness area in Africa, world renowned for its exceptional population of lion, leopard, cheetah and  elephant. The Greater Mara ecosystem encompasses areas known as the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle and several Maasai conservancies.

During these two days enjoy unlimited game drives with your guide, either full days or morning and evening game drives, depending on your choice. Also within the stays you will agree on the best day to visit the Maasai Village for a cultural experience and when to take a balloon safari – these are both optional activities charged by their respective authorities.

During the game drives you will have the opportunity to follow the progress of the herds and experience the full grassland cycle first-hand. As happens each year, the herds will gather on the banks of the Mara River in preparation for the most perilous stretch of the journey. As sheer pressure builds, the herds are finally forced to surge into the river, often hurling themselves off  high banks. In the struggle across the Mara River, many are drowned or swept away by strong  currents. The crossing attracts massive crocodiles who await for the herds on river banks in the hope to make them the meal for the day. By September the herds will begin reaching their goal and spreading out to graze across the expanse of the Mara.

After breakfast  you will check out of the hotel by 0830 hrs and head back to Nairobi via Narok-Mai Mahiu road. On arrival have lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant before being dropped off at the airport or chosen hotel.

Carnivore Restaurant is an open-air restaurant in the Langata suburb of Nairobi, Kenya. Carnivore’s specialty is meat and features an all-you-can-eat meat buffet. They serve a wide variety of meat and were famous for their game meat until Kenya imposed a ban on the sale of game meat in 2004.
