For those who want to seek out gorillas and chimpanzees, Rwanda is the ideal destination. In Volcanoes National Park go gorilla trekking and enjoy the incredible experience once you find them. Continue to Nyungwe National Park, montane forest and rich area of biodiversity, where you experience a fantastic canopy walk high in the forest and a trek to search for chimpanzees.
From USD 3,000 per person
On arrival at Kigali international Airport, you will be picked by our driver/guide and start with a visit to the genocide memorial. For many visitors a trip to Rwanda is not complete without visiting Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi. It is not only the place where 250,000 victims of the genocide have their final resting place but it also documents Rwanda’s history throughout its turbulent years and other genocides that have happened all over the world in the past. Later, you drive to Musanze and check-in to the hotel. After settling in go for lunch and visit Musanze food market. Later go back to the hotel and relax in the afternoon to get ready for tomorrow’s gorilla trek.
After an early breakfast, your drive guide will drive you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing from the park guide. The guide will go with you into the forest for the start of the trek to see the mountain gorillas. You will be amazed by the behaviour, size of the mountain gorillas and how they communicate. After 2 hours experience you will drive back to Musanze town for lunch. Later drive to Kibuye, a 3.5-hour drive from Musanze, where you check in to the hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure.
After breakfast you will depart for Nyungwe National Park, a 2-hour drive from Kibuye. Firstly check-in to the hotel, then have lunch and later in the afternoon enjoy a Nyungwe Canopy Walk. The canopy walkway provides an exhilarating perspective of the ancient treetops and wildlife and is a great experience to see the forest from above the trees. Set 50 m above the ground with a 150 m walkway, the canopy walk is the first of its kind in East Africa and third on the continent (after South Africa and Ghana).
After an early morning breakfast drive to the starting point of your chimpanzee trek. Two species of chimpanzee occur in Africa: bonobo and the common chimpanzee pan troglodytes (often shortened to chimpanzee, sometimes referred to as the robust chimpanzee). The largest remaining populations occur in Central Africa (Gabon, DR Congo and Cameroon) with about 400 individuals in Rwanda. However, it is not guaranteed to see the chimps as they are unpredictable and can move long distances in one day. Nyungwe National Park is the largest block of montane forest in East and Central Africa and it is an incredibly rich area of biodiversity. Later in the afternoon drive back to Kigali. If you have an evening flight your guide will drop you at the airport.
