Luxury, Mid Range
This safari takes you to Kenya’s cool and fertile central highlands, the drier northern frontier of Samburu where you sleep under the stars, the world famous bird sanctuaries of the Great Rift Valley - Lakes Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru, then south over the Mau Escarpment to Kenya’s greatest concentration of game - the Masai Mara. You spend the night in Maasai Manyatta (mud huts) and enjoy some of the most authentic, breathtaking Maasai experiences before spending the last few days enjoying the Mara magic through morning and afternoon game drives.
From USD 3,600 per person
Depart Nairobi in the early morning and drive to the Aberdare Ranges to The Ark which overlooks floodlit waterholes frequented by wildlife. As dusk ensues, we enjoy a relaxing sun downer whilst viewing game as they gradually approach the waterhole – a truly magical experience. Animals to look out for in the Aberdares and Mt Kenya waterholes are the elusive rare bongo, buffalo, rhino, elephants and other herbivores.
Meal plan: Lunch & dinner
After breakfast we proceed further north across the Equator to the edge of the Northern Frontier; to Samburu Game Reserve. Arrival around lunch hours followed by an afternoon game drive in this diverse landscape of thorn scrub, red dirt, dried river beds, broken volcanic rock, steep hills, and rocky outcroppings. Return for a sun downer and dinner at the lodge/tented camp.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
The following day will be spent relaxing and leisurely exploring the Samburu Reserve enjoying sightings of the uncommon Grevy’s zebra with huge fury ears, gerenuk antelope standing on hind legs to feed, Somali ostriches with distinct blue legs, shy Oryx as well as elephant and crocodiles.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
We enjoy a final early morning game drive in the Samburu Reserve as we depart the park for a unique experience by the Ewaso Nyiro River. The Koija Starbeds are something really very special. They are set on raised platform overlooking the mighty Ewaso Nyiro River and the landscape beyond. The room is partly covered by a thatch roof, under which rests the weirdest sleeping contraption you’re ever likely to encounter! The double beds can be wheeled out into the open for a night of sleeping in the open air under the twinkling stars, safely cloaked in a big mosquito net. The owners and indeed hosts of the starbeds are the local Laikipiak Maasai.
Optional activities this afternoon include; Nature Walks, Hiking, Fishing (bring your own equipment), Camel treks and cultural immersions (payable direct).
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Enjoy a dawn sunrise and perhaps sightings of elephant as they splash about in the Ewaso River below before enjoying a final breakfast. We depart towards Lake Baringo which is Kenya’s bird watching centre with over 450 bird species as well as hippos and crocodiles. Accommodation and dinner in the comforts of a lodge.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
We enjoy one hour morning boat ride in search of hippo, crocodile, and fish eagle. We then drive along the floor of the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru and the Nakuru National Park for lunch at the lodge and an afternoon game drive observing warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, white and black rhinos, flamingos and pelicans. We spend the night at the lodge/tented camp.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Morning breakfast and departure towards the Loita Hills to spend some time with the Masai.
Here a host of activities await you;
In the evening enjoy relax, unwind and bathe in the mineral rich volcanic hot-spring that Maji Moto hot springs are famous for before settling into your Maasai Manyattas (mud huts). These structures were built by the women of the Maji Moto Maasai Cultural Camp women’s village in the same way they build their own homes using natural materials from the Loita Hills.
The camp has upgraded the traditional designs with the comforts of solar lighting, stone flooring, memory foam beds and private terraces. All rooms share flush camp toilets and hot mineral water showers to make your stay in the natural landscapes of Maji Moto even more enjoyable.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Early breakfast before enjoying a nature walk in the company of Maasai tribesmen through the Loita Hills and natural landscapes of Maji Moto. Say goodbye to our hosts before departing towards the Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive looking for Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
The next day is spent game viewing, in the early morning hours and in the evenings as this is when we have the best chances of seeing wildlife. The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move into Mara from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass.
You may opt to enjoy a balloon ride over the vast Masai Mara plains followed by a champagne breakfast after the magical experience.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast we enjoy a last morning game drive before departing back to Nairobi with packed lunches. We make brief stop in Narok town to stretch our legs and perhaps buy some curios. We also make a stop at the escarpment to enjoy views of Mt Suswa and Longonot in the far distance arriving back in Nairobi in the late afternoon. Drop off back at your hotel.
