Wildebeest Migration Travel Times

We recommend planning this trip between November and June, when the herds are plentiful in the southern plains. May and June are the best time to see the wildebeest migration. If the migration is not as important to you then July and October is a good time for Tarangire National Park with its smaller migration of various mammals and birds.

Day by Day Overview

Your guide will pick you up from the airport before you head to Tarangire National Park. You will drive through the foothills of Mount Meru before reaching the park filled with baobab trees. Make your way to your beautiful lodge, tucked away between the kopjes with spectacular views of the surrounding plains. Enjoy the afternoon relaxing after the drive before a delicious dinner under the stars.

Overnight at Tarangire Sopa Lodge

An early rise to enjoy a fresh cup of Tanzanian coffee before setting out on a full day game drive in the park. You will have the opportunity to observe herds of elephant with no other vehicles around, a rarity in African parks these days. Look for oryx and gerenuk antelope, not often seen in other parks, as you explore the plains. Enjoy a packed lunch before continuing your search for wildlife and returning to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Overnight at Tarangire Sopa Lodge

After a fresh fruit and homemade pastry breakfast, enjoy a coffee and make your way to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. Stop by the Mto-Wa-Mbu village, for a taste of Tanzanian culture on the way. The town of 18,000 is home to a rich variety of Tanzanian tribes, with a high percentage of them being Maasai warriors. This is a wonderful spot to pick up local crafts and souvenirs. In the afternoon you will reach the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Make your way to your lodge, located on the edge of the crater. Unwind after the drive and head towards the craters edge for one of the best sunset cocktails you will ever have. In the evening you will enjoy a buffet dinner.

Overnight at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

After an early breakfast you will begin your full day exploration of the Ngorongoro Crater, created two-three million years ago when an ancient volcano exploded. The crater walls act as a natural enclosure, housing an impressive world of diversity within. You can see the entire big five in the reserve which is one of the best places in Africa for game viewing. The crater walls have also created an incredibly high lion population that offer amazing sightings of the big cats. Later you will head back to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge

Wake up early before venturing towards the famous Serengeti. An en-route stopover at Olduvai Gorge, a site made famous by anthropologists Mary and Louis Leaky, who discovered the oldest known hominid remains in the 1960s, giving it the name ‘The Cradle of Mankind’. Since the initial discovery, over 60 hominids have been discovered in the area, providing the most comprehensive documentation of human evolution. Arrive in the Serengeti in the late afternoon and relax before dinner.

Overnight at Seronera Wildlife Lodge

Enjoy a full day game drive in the park as you search the vast plains for the prolific wildlife that inhabit the area. Your guide will tailor the drive to your particular interests, depending on whether it is birds, big cats or the wildebeest migration you wish to see. The park offers excellent game viewing opportunities due to the open environment that allows for easier spotting. Return to the lodge after a successful day in the bush and enjoy another locally inspired dinner followed by an aperitif on the lodge patio.

Overnight at Seronera Wildlife Lodge

An early wake up before sunrise for the best chance of seeing amazing sightings as this is when the animals are most active. Watch the many antelope, zebra and wildebeest as you scan the horizon for signs of a predator on the hunt before returning to the lodge for breakfast. Mid-morning you will travel north through the park to the Kenyan border. Driving slowly for some more game viewing en-route to your next lodge. The lodge is situated in the best part along the wildebeest migration route. Relax for the rest of the day and enjoy what the property has to offer.

Overnight at Lobo Wildlife Lodge

Today will be an epic finale to your time in the Serengeti as you spend a full day in the heart of the great wildebeest migration. Leave the lodge and head directly into the middle of the massive herds of more then two million wildebeest and thousands of zebra. Following the movements of the herd, you will drive northwards as you approach the mighty Mara River with its crocodile infested waters. Drive alongside the natural border-line between Kenya and Tanzania in anticipation of the crossing. With luck, you will have the chance to watch this amazing spectacle as the wildebeest plunge into the river to reach the other side. Enjoy a picnic lunch before some more game viewing and heading back to camp for the evening.

Overnight at Lobo Wildlife Lodge

After breakfast, you will head to Lake Manyara National Park with an en-route stop at a Maasai village for a final opportunity to interact with the local Maasai warriors. This would be the perfect time to watch a traditional dance performance, which incorporates the famous Maasai jump. The village visit will also be a great time to purchase a few final mementos from Africa. Arrive at the park in the late afternoon and make your way to your camp located on a beautiful cliff with amazing views of the lake below. A hearty dinner and an evening at the fire place awaits.

Rise early to take full advantage of your final day in the African bush. Make your way through the tranquil park on a slow game drive, the perfect way to reflect on your amazing adventure that is drawing to a close. The park contains a massive alkaline lake that attracts huge flocks of flamingos among many other birds. Mixed forests that encircle the lake are inhabited by the resident tree-climbing lions, a phenomenon unique to this park in Tanzania. In the afternoon you will drive back to Arusha for your flight.
