Tanzania

Guided, Large Group, Small Group

Camping, Mid Range
This migration safari in Tanzania offers a great opportunity to experience the largest migration of wild animals on earth across the vast plains of the central to north Serengeti National Park. It takes you via the western corridor between the months of June and October, the dry spell. The wildebeest migration crosses the Grumeti River where giant Nile crocodile dwell, and settles in the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, the extension to the Serengeti ecosystem. It then heads back through the north east and further to the southern Ndutu plains of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro for the calving season between late January and early march. This is the most amazing spectacle consisting of more than two million wildebeest and zebra as well as hundreds of thousands of ungulate animals accompanied by fearless predators like lion, cheetah and hyena, that follow from behind, feasting on exhausted and careless prey. You will stay in mid-range luxury tented camps offering the best wild comfort, that will totally make you fall in love with Tanzania.

Today we drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day’s game drive. This is one of Tanzania’s smaller parks but still offers a rewarding and diverse safari experience. The lakeshore at Manyara teems with birdlife, and while you are looking for the birds, you might spot one of the elusive tree-climbing lions. There are a surprising number of other large mammals and the striking cliffs on the Rift escarpment form a dramatic backdrop. In the late afternoon, we make a short journey from the park to our special wilderness lodge.
After breakfast, you head via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards the Serengeti plains – game drive en route – to the Seronera area (central Serengeti). Head over to the rock kopjes where you have good chances of seeing some of the cat families. Cheetah and lion use these giant rock outcrops as observation posts. Mid-afternoon you head towards Acacia Camp located in central Serengeti where you arrive in time for sundowner drinks.
After breakfast, you slowly start the drive towards the northern part of the park in order to try and catch a glimpse of the annual wildebeest migration – explore the river and head up to Mara River Camp for relaxation and overnight.
Dawn game drives of the area then return to the camp for breakfast, followed by a full day’s game drive OR relaxation at the camp and head out on a sunset game drive. Plan your day together with your driver-guide and explore the river shores.
After breakfast, we get back on the road towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our drive takes us back through the Serengeti via a different route, offering plenty of opportunities to spot the animals that eluded you on day two. As far as the eye can see, you’ll spot thousands upon thousands of animals in herds; wildebeest and zebra migrating together, tall and graceful giraffe, jumping antelope and gazelle, the powerful African elephant, and the most respected group of animals: the predators.
After breakfast, you’ll depart for the Ngorongoro Crater; considered by some to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. When you get your first glimpse of this vast, verdant caldera from the panoramic viewpoint, you’ll soon understand why it has earned such a lofty reputation. Finally, we descend into the crater. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard (if you are lucky). The only animal you won’t see here is giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steep sides of the crater. In the late afternoon, we travel just outside of the crater to our special tented camp.
Today we drive to Tarangire National Park, for excellent game viewing. Tarangire is a small park that offers some excellent sights. Generally, in the dry season, Tarangire comes alive as wildlife and birdlife congregate on the Tarangire River, which is a permanent source of water. We spend the night in our lodge beautifully set inside the park with stunning views and a unique atmosphere.
Morning breakfast at Tarangire Safari Lodge and then the rest of the day is free to relax or head out on the Masai cultural experience. You will go on a walk to visit Masai tribes and the area in which they live. Learning about their history is as fascinating as the views are breathtaking from several hilltop peaks in the area. Later head back to Arusha to arrive by the evening.
Anytime after breakfast or lunch, we will drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international flight back home or join another tour, either Kilimanjaro trek or Zanzibar beach holiday.
