Overview

A community based organisation, Semadep is owned and managed by the Maasai community living adjacent to the great Maasai Mara. It runs projects to address community needs, one of which is Semadep Safari Camp, which was set up to generate funds to sustain the projects. The camp offers safaris to the Masai Mara National Reserve including wildebeest migration safaris, birding safaris, photography safaris, group safaris and family safaris together with activities with the local Maasai such as tracking elephants with Maasai warriors, bush walks, bow and arrow classes, visits to a local Maasai village, school, church or hospital, spending the night in a Maasai village.

About Us

Sekenani Maasai Development Project (SEMADEP) is a community based organisation started in 1997 through the effort of church leaders seeking opportunities to address community needs which ranged from a lack of health facilities, poor sanitation, poverty, illiteracy, human-wildlife conflicts and the increasing HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Our Projects Include

  • Sekenani Community Health Centre providing medical care and education for the community
  • Sekenani Community Knowledge Centre access to computers and the internet as well as training.
  • A water pump providing clean drinking water for the local villages.
  • Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Programme (OVCP)
  • A Pre-school for children aged 3-5.
  • Provision for orphans and vulnerable children within the Maasai community.
  • A cattle dip to prevent the death through disease of livestock.
  • The setting up and running of a safari campsite to generate funds to sustain the projects.

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara National Reserve is about 1,510 km² in size and located in the south west of Kenya. There are two rivers in the Masai Mara, the Talek River and the Mara River where you can see the animals crossing during the annual migration. The best time to visit the park to see the migration is between the end of June and October.
