Gorillas are the largest living primates in the world. They are magnificent animals with incredible strength and acute intelligence. Central Sub-Saharan Africa is the only place on the planet to witness these incredible large apes in the wild. Unfortunately, many species of gorilla are critically endangered. They are vulnerable to poaching, disease, and habitat loss. Although a huge amount of conservation work is being done to protect them, it’s worth considering that now is good time to see them before access is more restricted or, worst case scenario, they are completely gone.

Where to See Gorillas in Africa
Despite their endangered status, there are many places throughout central Sub-Saharan Africa to find wild gorillas. Although Uganda and Rwanda are the most famous gorilla destinations, they are not the only ones!
Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda
Rwanda is a well-known gorilla destination. As a result of its popularity, a gorilla permit can cost as much as $1500 in any season. However, the cost is well worth it if it means helping to protect these amazing animals. Tourists flock to Rwanda for its better-developed infrastructure. Volcanoes National Park, lying along the Virunga Mountains and home to five of the eight volcanoes in this mountain range, is the most popular destination for gorilla watching.

Cross River Gorillas in Nigeria
The border of Cameroon and Nigeria is the only place in the world where you can observe Cross River gorillas in the wild. The Cross River National Park, Afi Mountain, and Mbe Mountain are where they reside. Sadly, there are only 200 or 300 Cross River gorillas left in the area. It makes sighting them difficult, but also so much more rewarding.
Different Types of Gorillas in Cameroon
Sharing a border with Nigeria means sharing their Cross River gorillas. They have the Limbe Wildlife Center where you can find captive Cross River gorillas, but there are no wild gorilla tours available yet. However, you can find another type of gorillas in Cameroon as well. There is also the western lowland gorilla in Campo-Ma’an National Park. There is a small eco-tourism development available.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo
Out of the 4 subspecies of mountain gorillas, 3 of them can be found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. DR Congo shares the Virunga Conservation Area with both Rwanda and Uganda. Eastern lowland gorillas can be seen in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, mountain gorillas can be seen in Virunga National Park, and western lowland gorillas can be seen in the Madiakoko Mountains.
