Tour Overview

This safari is a great combination of Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingo-lined lake, and the world-renowned Masai Mara National Park. Lake Nakuru is a beautiful shallow alkaline lake surrounded by acacia woodland and rich savanna while the national park is a superb example of conservation at work in wild. Masai Mara is a reserve of breathless vistas, a panorama of vast rolling plains, hills and woodland and groves, well watered by the lovely Mara river.

Day by Day Overview

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’re met by a CATS Africa representative. After a short briefing on your safari, depart with the professional driver/guide down the Great Rift Valley floor to Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving in time for lunch at the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. Lake Nakuru National Park is home to Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary and one of the largest concentrations of black rhinoceros in the world together with a large population of white rhino. There is also a sanctuary to protect Rothschild giraffes. In terms of predators, look out for lion and leopard as well as large pythons which hide in the dense woodlands and may occasionally be seen crossing roads or dangling from trees. Other game you might see here includes Thomson’s and Grant gazelle, long-eared leaf-nosed bat, colobus monkey, rock hyrax, hippo, waterbuck, impala, striped hyena, bat-eared fox, wildcat, reedbuck and golden cat.

Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge (full board)

This morning you travel to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, named after the local word for ‘spotted plains’. A magnificent national reserve, the Mara is home to Kenya’s richest concentration of wildlife on golden grassland dotted with acacia, wildebeest, zebra, lion, jackal and much more, bound together by the cycle of life and death. Check-in at the lodge, then have lunch and later depart for an evening game drive to enjoy the diverse flora and fauna.

Dinner and overnight at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge (full board)

Spend the day either on a morning and evening game drive, or on a full day game drive with a picnic lunch. Look out for not only the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino & buffalo) but plenty more game including wildebeest, zebra, impala, topi, giraffe, Thomson’s gazelle, hyena, cheetah, jackal and bat-eared fox. Black rhino are a little shy and hard to spot but sometimes they can be seen at a distance. The Masai Mara also hosts the remarkable wildebeest migration across from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania, which happens every year from late June to October/early November. Optional activities available at an extra cost inlcude hot air balloon safari, visit to local schools and villages, nature/bird walks.

All meals and overnight at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge (full board)

Breakfast is served at the camp and later check-out. Depart with a game viewing drive en route to Nairobi stopping at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint panoramic view of the beautiful escarpment. Arrive in Nairobi in time for lunch (on own account) before being transferred later to JKIA for your onward flight
